Leeds Rhinos 28 Hull FC 24

26th June 2004

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds extended their lead at the top of the Tetley’s Super League after twice coming from behind to beat Hull 28-24 at Headingley.

The Rhinos started brightly but were behind 12-10 at the interval after a Richard Horne penalty try and a touchdown from Nick Scruton, on loan from Leeds, against his own team-mates.

A further Shaun Briscoe effort checked Leeds' fightback in the second half but the Rhinos eventually triumphed after Ali Lauitiiti had taken his tally for the club to five tries in five appearances.  Both sides had had a try wiped out by the video referee in the opening quarter.

The Rhinos thought they had made the perfect start when Chris Feather pounced after Colin Best had spilled Andrew Dunemann's bomb.  But the second row was ruled to have lost control as he tried to touch down and Best got away with the error.

The visitors responded with a slick attack but they too were to be denied, with winger Best again the culprit as he was seen to have grazed the touchline before running in.  The deadlock was eventually broken by Lauitiiti as the game approached the quarter-mark.

Kevin Sinfield's long pass stretched Hull's defence and there was no stopping the giant Kiwi as he raced on to Dunemann's pass and planted the ball over the line.  Leeds added a second try after Best's vulnerability was again exploited.

Marcus Bai took Sinfield's high kick well and turned out of Best's weak challenge to put Senior in with an overhead pass. Sinfield converted to extend the lead but Hull turned the game around with two quick tries to go in at half-time in front.

The first was a penalty try, Leeds full-back Richard Mathers effectively surrendering six points when he impeded Horne in the act of scoring.

Whiting sparked the attack when he intercepted from Sinfield and raced clear. The ball was passed inside and Horne looked to be winning the race to his own kick when Mathers brought him down and was sin-binned.

Paul Cooke converted and added the extras again after Scruton forced his way over just before the hooter.  The lead did not last long as the Rhinos returned fire with a try just two minutes into the second half.  This time it was Gareth Raynor who failed to claim a Dunemann kick and Walker was in the right place to gather and score.

Hull rallied and, after being denied a Shayne McMenemy try when Briscoe accidentally headed the ball forward, edged back in front on the hour.  Briscoe claimed the try after a clever kick by Cooke, who then converted to put the visitors ahead by four points.

But Leeds reminded the 15,153 crowd why they are top of the league as they snatched back the initiative with two tries in the space of as many minutes.  Lauitiiti combined well with Bai on the left to power in for his second of the night and Chris McKenna then burst clear to put fellow substitute Jones-Buchanan over.

Rob Burrow converted both and then added a penalty to put the game safe.  Hullclaimed a late consolation when Best raced down the touchline to score with a minute remaining. Cooke converted but Leeds had just done enough.
