Hull FC 24 Leeds Rhinos 19

12th September 2014

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos suffered yet another defeat by a single score as they allowed a 19-4 lead slip in the second half at the KC Stadium.

The first was one that both teams would be keen to forget with errors throughout from both teams in the greasy wet playing conditions. It was the home side who struck first, inevitably from an error, unfortunately for Zak Hardaker it was the Leeds full back who was punished when he lost the ball in contact coming away from his own line and Tom Lineham was quickest to react and go over in the corner. Jordan Rankin missed the conversion attempt but his side led 4-0.

Leeds only really found their feet in the closing stages of the half as they finally made Hull pay for a mistake. Rob Burrow made a real impact of the bench as he took the game to Hull and he put Carl Ablett in space so he could power over for the try. Sinfield added the conversion and then a drop goal with the last play of the half.
The dour first half gave little insight into the drama that would unfold after the break. Leeds increased their lead when Kallum Watkins picked up a loose ball and raced up field. He passed to Danny McGuire, who finished up outwide. Sinfield added the conversion to put his side in control.

That lead was extended with Ryan Hall took advantage of the space created for him by Liam Sutcliffe and then held off two defenders to score. Sinfield was again on target and his side now led 19-4 just before the hour mark.

When Gareth Ellis touched down Kirk Yeaman’s through kick it seemed little more than a consolation try however the former Rhino then put Fetuli Talanoa over with a superb offload and the home side sensed the comeback was on. Jordan Rankin missed both conversions but they were within touching distance at 19-12.

That set up a grand stand finish and the home side rode the emotional wave inside the KC Stadium on Richard Horne’s final appearance for the club. They kept hold of the momentum and crossed for two tries through Jack Logan in the final eight minutes to snatch victory. Rankin found his kicking boots and converted the last two tries to give his side a 24-19 win.
