Huddersfield Giants 10 Leeds Rhinos 42

8th August 2004

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos effectively wrapped up this victory inside 42 minutes, in which time they had opened up a 30-0 lead.

Leeds started strongly, with Wayne McDonald spinning through Sean Penkywicz's attempted tackle to dive in on four minutes.

Marcus Bai crossed five minutes later following good work from Dave Furner and Keith Senior, and two Kevin Sinfield goals gave them a 12-0 lead.

Brandon Costin missed a long-range penalty attempt as Huddersfield looked to get off the mark, but Leeds continued their dominance with a third try on 23 minutes.

McDonald and Danny McGuire had been stopped just short, but the ball was moved right and Francis Cummins did well to cut infield and offload for Chris McKenna to touch down.

McGuire then broke downfield and coolly swapped passes with Bai before setting up the position for Rob Burrow to make it 24-0.

McGuire then got on the scoresheet himself working a move with Bai to score his 30th try of the season.  Costin and Evans then hit back for the home side however Leeds sealed the win with two tries in the final seven minutes.

The first saw Willie Poching power between Costin and Chris Nero on a 35-metre charge to the line before McKenna touched down McGuire's kick in injury time, Burrow converting both to add the gloss to the win.
