Featherstone Rovers 6 Leeds Rhinos 62

6th August 2016

By Leeds Rhinos

Four tries from Kallum Watkins were the highlight of an impressive opening game of the Super 8s Qualifiers from Leeds Rhinos against Featherstone Rovers at the Big Fellas Stadium.

The Rhinos travelled to the Big Fellas Stadium for their opening game in the Super 8s Qualifiers to face an in form Featherstone Rovers outfit.

It was important that Leeds took control of the game early on and they were able to do that on the back of an error by Rovers prop Andy Bostock. Having defended for a long period, the home side were looking to make the most of a possession in the Leeds half but the attempted offload was snatched up by Leeds who immediately went on the attack.  Danny McGuire and Liam Sutcliffe combined well to create the gap for Kallum Watkins to power over.

Leeds doubled their lead after 15 minutes when Jamie Jones-Buchanan intercepted another attempted offload near his own line and the Rhinos were ruthless again. Watkins found himself in space 20 metres from the home line and burst through before opting to pass back inside to Liam Sutcliffe to score. The full back converted his own try to give his side a 10-0 lead.

After that early shock, Jon Sharp’s side came into the game after that and were twice denied a try by some impressive goal line defence by the Rhinos. However, they did cross on the half hour. This time it was Misi Taulapapa who intercepted and the centre galloped 50 metres up field. The initial danger was stopped but as Featherstone looked to throw the ball wide, Tom Briscoe batted the ball down but he could not get to the loose ball before Anthony Thackeray, who stretched out to score before the ball ran dead. Kyle Briggs added the conversion to cut the gap to 10-6 and re-ignite the home fans.

However, Leeds came up with the perfect response almost immediately. Jamie Jones-Buchanan offloaded to James Segeyaro 25 metres from the home line and the hooker moved the ball quickly onto Joel Moon who had enough space to get over before the cover met him. Sutcliffe did well to convert from wide out, especially after an enormous bang in the crowd just behind him as he stepped up to kick the ball, and his side led 16-6.

The lead was increased with the final kick of the half when Jones-Buchanan again created a chance for his side with an offload to Segeyaro, who this time passed to Delaney, who was taken high in the tackle. Sutcliffe kicked the penalty with the final play of the first half to make it 18-6 at the break.

The game was still in the balance at that stage but the Rhinos were impressive after the break as they took the result away from Featherstone with a spell of regular scoring.

The first came from Watkins, as he scored his second game, when Liam Sutcliffe glided through a gap before passing back inside to Watkins to score.  The try came from an error by Thackeray after the Rovers man had kicked out on the full from inside his own half.

Leeds then scored on their next set when a cross field kick was allowed to bounce. Tom Briscoe go to it first and he offloaded back inside with the ball eventually finding Mitch Achurch and the giant forward strided over to score.  Sutcliffe converted both tries to give his side a 30-6 lead.

There was no let up from Leeds after that, firstly Carl Ablett powered his way over from close range before Tom Briscoe finished brilliantly against his home town club after a break by Watkins.

Sutcliffe then finished another fine move involving Jimmy Keinhorst and Ryan Hall.

Keinhorst was then sin binned for holding Ian Hardman down after making a try saving tackle on the full back near the line. Featherstone were then denied a try by the video referee Chris Kendall for obstruction and Leeds went the length of the field to score through Moon on the next set. Sutcliffe added the conversion to bring up the half century.

The game finished with a flourish as Watkins completed his hat trick and then scored a long range effort for his fourth try of the game. Sutcliffe converting both to make it 6-62.
