Rhinos coach McClennan added: "It was a 50-50 call. Both teams beat us the last time we played.
"We looked at the lowest-ranked team coming through but Catalans are doing a great job. They are in good form and we know we're in for a tough job on Friday night."
When asked whether he liked the Club Call system he said, "We are always keen to promote our great game. There has been a great deal of interest around the semi finals thanks to the Club Call system, interest that would not have been there otherwise. We realise that Rugby League needs to fight its corner to get publicity and we are happy to do our bit to promote our great game."
Catalans chief executive Christophe Levy said: "It's not really a surprise. It is a huge task. We have never won here but we had never won at St Helens up to two weeks ago."
