Butterill names scholarship squad for Broncos clash

Leeds Rhinos Scholarship Head Coach Mark Butterill

After the Under-19s and Under-17s got their season’s underway two weeks ago, Leeds Rhinos Under-16s finally kick off their season against London Broncos this Sunday at Richmond Sports Association, kick off 2pm.

Like the Academy, the Under-16s season will not be in a League format, with the focus on player development for this year’s team. For Leeds, it will be the first scholarship match the Rhinos have played in since November 2019, when they took on NSW Country Rugby League in a friendly in December 2019.

Scholarship head coach Mark Butterill has named eight players that will be playing their first game in Leeds colours. Fergus McCormack, Joe Phillips, Archie Hurford, Mason Corbett, Lloyd McEwan-Peters, Kai Taylor-Smith, Bobby Hartley and David Benson all signed their first scholarship contracts for 2021 and will get their first run out for Leeds on Sunday.

Seven players have already played in 2021 but for the Under-17s. Alfie Marshall and Jack Smith both scored tries against Hull FC Under-17s last Wednesday, while Alfie Beresford, Tom Marris, Jude Thompson and Blake Morgan also featured. Jack Sinfield will captain the side for the first time this year too.

Leeds Rhinos Under-16s made a winning start to 2021 with a 48-8 win over London Broncos Under-16s at Richmond; Jack Sinfield and Riley Lumb leading the way with two tries each.

The young Rhinos came out of the traps quickly and put the game to bed in the first half, scoring five tries. On their first attacking set, captain Jack Sinfield kicked a 40/20 to put Leeds right on their opponents’ line. Following a drive by Blake Morgan, Sinfield passed to Dylan Proud, who provided a nice ball over the top for Riley Lumb to get over in the corner.

Minutes later, Sinfield grabbed a try of his own extended the visitors’ lead out to twelve. A knock on by London prop Harry Glover turned the ball over to Mark Butterill’ side on the half way line before a powerful drive by Jude Thompson set Leeds in motion. Sinfield helped make the initial break, setting up Archie Hurford to drive through the Broncos line before he offloaded to Alfie Beresford, who was tackled just short of the line. Noticing a hole in the defence, Sinfield took over at dummy half and jumped out to score. The half back converted his own try to make the score 12-0.

From the restart, Leeds were in again through Jack Smith. The centre had scored on his first appearance for Leeds’ Under-17s two weeks before and after a good carry from Lloyd McEwan-Peters, the centre was on hand to take Lumb’s offload and streak away to touch down under the posts.

London tried to capitalise from a set of errors against Leeds but as they entered the Rhinos’ half for the first time, a poor kick from Stanley Pyke on the fifth tackle saw the ball run over the dead ball line and give the Rhinos a seven tackle set. The Broncos had another chance on the Leeds line but Arthur Thompsett’s kick was collected by Leeds.

Lumb and Smith were proving troublesome all afternoon and both players had a hand once again to set up substitute Bobby Hartley for Leeds’ fourth try of the afternoon; Hartley breaking away from a Smith offload to score. A break by Marshall, off the back of a Sinfield drop off, then set up the Rhinos again. London gave away a penalty shortly after Marshall’s break for a knock on and Leeds’ spine players combined on the first play; Sinfield, Fergus McCormack and Proud spreading the ball wide of Lumb, who powered his way through three London defenders to get the ball down.

just before the half time break, London finally got on the scoreboard through Jack Roberts. Back to back penalties enabled the home side to get down towards the try line and having brought the ball under the posts, Pyke and Thompsett combined with Calum Duffy, who supplied Roberts with enough space to finish the try off. Pyke missed the conversion as the teams went into half time with the score 30-4 to the Rhinos.

The visitors started the second half as they had finished the first; Sinfield grabbing his second try of the afternoon. A knock on close to the Broncos line was enough to entice the Rhinos and as Tom Marris had been denied in the corner, captain Sinfield marshalled his players for the left side push bu decided to go at the line himself, ducking through one tackle and walking his way over the try line.

London hit back for their second try of the game, Duffy benefitting from some quick hands to ground the ball in the corner, but Leeds thought they had reacted as Hartley dived in under the posts, but the referee disallowed the try for a knock on.

The Broncos kept pushing for points in a spirited performance but the Rhinos’ work in defence prevailed, notably stopping London full back Harry March over the line in one of London’s best attacking moves of the game.

The visitors soon put the game to bed with three final tries before the full time whistle. Off the back of a quick play of the ball from Thompson, substitute hooker Mason Corbett fired straight from dummy half and managed to beat two Broncos defenders to get the ball down. Marris also added his name to the scoresheet off the back of a penalty against London, and finally Kai Taylor-Smith made a run straight through the heart of the London defence from 15 metres out to round off the scoring, the final score 48-8.
