Flashback: Five Top Super League Meetings vs Huddersfield Giants

Here is a look back at some of our top Super League meetings against Huddersfield Giants at Emerald Headingley.

The first time the two sides met in Super League came in 1998 and there was nothing Huddersfield could do to stop Graham Murray’s side, who had started the league season unbeaten. Leading try scorer Francis Cummins and Marcus St Hilaire led the way for Leeds, both scoring braces, whilst Andy Hay, Ryan Sheridan, Tony Kemp and Graham Holroyd also touched down for the Rhinos. Iestyn Harris finished the game with an impressive 22 points too, scoring a try and kicking nine goals.

A year later, Harris produced a historic 42 point performance at Headingley to help Graham Murray’s side to an easy 86-6 victory over the struggling Giants. Besides the 13 goals he kicked, the half back added four tries that day to take his tally for the season to 15. Winger Paul Sterling also recorded a hat trick whilst Marcus St Hilaire, Ryan Sheridan, Martin Masella, Andy Speak, Marvin Golden, Andy Farrell and Francis Cummins all crossed the whitewash.

In 2010, a last second drop goal from Kevin Sinfield helped Leeds to a 21-20 result against league rivals Huddersfield. Both sides were battling for a place in the Play Offs and July’s meeting proved an entertaining one. Leeds wore a special charity shirt to help raise the awareness of the risks men face against cancer and featured a tribute to Leeds legend John Holmes, who lost his battle with cancer in 2009. Chris Clarkson’s try got Leeds off to the perfect start before future Rhino Shaun Lunt burrowed his way over the line. Two tries from Brett Hodgson extended the Giants’ lead further but a score from Ryan Hall and penalty from Sinfield levelled the scores up. Larne Patrick and Danny McGuire added further tries as the score stayed at a deadlock before Sinfield’s successful one-pointer gave Leeds the two league points.

Leeds were unbeaten at the start of the 2015 season and met a struggling Huddersfield side who were looking for their first win of the new season at Emerald Headingley. Carl Ablett, Adam Cuthbertson and Ryan Hall gave the Rhinos an 18-0 lead just before the half hour mark but the Giants fought back to make the score 18-12 at half time, thanks to tries from Jamie Ellis and Joe Wardle. Tom Briscoe’s score at the start of the second half was met by back to back tries from Kyle Wood and Brett Ferres as the Giants took the lead for the first time but it would be Paul Aiton’s try on 73 minutes that won the game for the Rhinos.

When the two sides met at Emerald Headingley in 2019, a six try performance made sure Leeds got their third win of the Super League season. Fresh from a 78-6 Challenge Cup victory over Workington the week before, the Rhinos were electric from the kick off; Tui Lolohea, James Donaldson, Brad Dwyer, Richie Myler and Tom Briscoe establishing a 30-0 lead. Akuila Uate, Adam O’Brien and Darnell McIntosh replied for the Giants in the second half but a penalty goal from Lolohea and interception try from Ash Handley sealed the win for the Rhinos.
