More games in full for you to enjoy this week

Throughout the coronavirus lockdown, we will continue to give you two games in full each day for you to enjoy from our archives. Here’s what we have in store this week including some fantastic Super League action that happen this week in years gone by with a classic play off game at Warrington and a Grand Final to enjoy this weekend.

Monday 22nd June

Leeds v Hull FC 1st January 1990

Leeds welcomed in the new decade at Headingley on 1st January 1990 with the visit of Hull FC as Cavill Heugh made his debut for the home side after signing from Barrow to replace Craig Izzard.

Leeds v St Helens 25th September 1988

A crowd of 12,062 were at Headingley for the second home game of the 1988-89 Championship campaign with Mal Reilly’s new look side looking to get back to winning ways after defeat to Widnes in their opening game of the season.

Tuesday 23rd June

Leeds v Widnes 9th March 1986

Leeds returned to Headingley play Widnes in a remarkable run of fixtures between the sides in March 1986 when the two teams met in four successive matches. Widnes had won at Naughton Park to start the month by just two points and Peter Fox’s team were out for revenge seven days later in the league.

Leeds Rhinos v Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 2006

It was Tony Smith v Tony Smith at Headingley in June 2006 as the Rhinos were aiming to get back to the top of the Super League table with a victory of ten or more points against the Wildcats.

Leeds Rhinos v Catalans Dragons 2009

Leeds Rhinos welcomed Catalans Dragons to Headingley in March 2009 for the first of a series of great battles against the men from Perpignan that season.

Leeds Rhinos v London Broncos Challenge Cup Quarter Final 2005

Leeds welcomed London Broncos to Headingley in the Quarter Final of the Challenge Cup in 2005 in a repeat of the Final from 1999. Leeds had defeated Wigan 70-0 in their previous game and were aiming to get back to Cardiff for the Final.

Thursday 25th June

Leeds Rhinos v Castleford Tigers 1997

In April 1997, Dean Bell’s Leeds Rhinos side welcomed Castleford Tigers to Headingley with Iestyn Harris becoming to have an immediate impact on the team just three games after his debut.

Leeds Rhinos v Hull FC 2004

Tony Smith’s Leeds Rhinos side face Hull FC at Headingley in June 2004 as they looked to bounce back from defeat at Wigan the previous week and re-establish their title winning credentials.

Friday 26th June

Rochdale v Leeds 10th March 1991

David Ward took his side to Spotland for the first ever time to face Rochdale Hornets in March 1991.

Warrington Wolves v Leeds Rhinos Play offs 2011

League Leaders Warrington Wolves had the Clubcall for the Grand Final Eliminator in 2011 and opted to play Leeds Rhinos at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and it created one of the greatest games of the Super League era.

Saturday 27th June

Leeds v Workington Town Challenge Cup Quarter Final 12th March 1995

Leeds and Workington met for a third time in the 1994-95 season as the side from Cumbria travelled to Headingley for this Challenge Cup Quarter Final tie in front of a crowd of 15,452.

Leeds Rhinos v Bradford Bulls 2009

The West Yorkshire derby at Headingley in June 2009 was a high scoring side as Brian McClennan’s Rhinos faced Steve McNamara’s Bulls, who included the likes of Sam Burgess, Steve Menzies and future England star Elliott Whitehead in only his four Super League appearance.

Sunday 28th June

Leeds Rhinos v Blackpool Panthers Challenge Cup 2010

Leeds played Blackpool in the Challenge Cup at Headingley in 2010 with centre Michael Coady grabbing a hat trick in one of only two appearances for the Rhinos first team squad whilst Brent Webb ran in five tries.

Leeds Rhinos v St Helens Super League Grand Final 2009

Leeds and St Helens meet for the third successive season in the Grand Final at Old Trafford. The Rhinos had finished top of the table after the regular season and the stage was set for another Grand Final classic between these sides.
