Leeds Rhinos Women’s players last week visited two young rugby players who had suffered injuries whilst playing rugby for their school and clubs.

Jess Bell, who plays for Hunslet Warriors, recently broke her femur during a game for her school team, Cockburn John Charles Academy.  Whilst recovering from her injury in hospital she received a visit from Leeds Rhinos Women’s captain Lois Forsell and winger Sophie Robinson, who also took along the Challenge Cup for the young player to see.

Jess’ mum Joanne said the visit from the players gave her a timely lift.

“The day the girls visited Jess in hospital she had to walk some steps and if she wasn’t able to do it she wouldn’t been allowed home,” explained Joanne. “Jess was on such a high after the visit though she did the steps with no problem!  Jess has been in a lot of pain but is doing really well and making good progress.

“Every time someone comes to visit her she shows them the ball that the girls brought her and has been wearing the t-shirt too.  It’s going to be about 3-6 months recovery, but she loves playing rugby and can’t wait to get back playing.

Forsell was then joined by team mate and England international Danika Priim on her visit to see Ellie Wainhouse, 13, who suffered a fractured pelvis whilst playing for East Leeds.  Both Forsell and Priim, who missed the end of the Rhinos season after suffering ACL injuries, said the girls had both been inspirations for them.

Priim said: “It was nice to be able to meet Ellie and see how well she is doing following her injury.  I know how tough it is when you suffer an injury but Ellie was so upbeat and positive and was definitely an inspiration for me.  I’d like to wish both girls all the best for their recovery.”

Ellie’s mum, Lucy, said the visit was a real boost for her daughter: “Ellie has been so strong during her injury, she even played on and scored a try before saying the pain was too much.  The visit from Lois and Daniika, who are both players she really admires, gave her a real lift and helped improve her mood.

“It’s quite difficult when you are injured as you feel like the only one in your team, so it was nice for Lois and Danika to share their stories with her.  Danika said visiting Ellie had helped her deal with her own injury so that was nice to know she is also helping them too.  Ellie is making good progress and we are all very proud of her and how she has handled her injury.”
