Leeds Rhinos half back Liam Sutcliffe says he is hoping to make the most of his opportunity this week after being called up for the England squad for the clash with France at Leigh on Wednesday.

Sutcliffe along with Ash Handley has been called up by Wayne Bennett from the England Knights squad for Wednesday game and could gain his first cap for England.

Sutcliffe joined up with the England squad at their Manchester base on Sunday for his first session with Wayne Bennett’s side. He commented, “It has gone really well, it was a bit wet and the conditions weren’t the best but I really enjoyed it. The call up was a bit of a surprise. I was at college doing my course when my phone rang and I saw Jamie Peacock’s name pop up. I shot straight out of class and answered. As soon as he told me I was over the moon.

“We trained with the Knights last Thursday. It was a tough session and that was really good for me. Six of us get to spend a bit more time with each other this week with the England side and we are looking forward to spending three weeks together when we head Down Under,” added Sutcliffe.

Whilst Sutcliffe has been preparing to travel to Papua New Guinea with the Knights, he says he felt welcome after joining up with the senior side for the first time, especially seeing a familiar face. He revealed, “Everyone was really welcoming as soon as we turned up. All the players came up to us straight away and introduced themselves, which was nice. I was a bit surprised when I saw Richie Myler walk through the door, I did a bit of a double take because I didn’t know he’d been called up. It is great for him, he has had a top season with us and he has been rewarded for that now.

“It was a bit surreal at first meeting Wayne Bennett because I have only ever known him from coaching in Australia. He came and sat with us at breakfast and had a chat. It is great to see how he coaches and it will be great to work with him this week.

“If some of us manage to get our first cap we will try and take our opportunity with both hands. It will be a great opportunity for us on Wednesday but regardless I think just being around the players in the England squad this week will be excellent for us.”

England face France at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday, October 17 (KO 7.45pm) in preparation for the Autumn International Series against New Zealand.
