Leeds Rhinos youngster Harry Newman grabbed his first senior hat trick as he helped Featherstone Rovers to an impressive Easter Monday win at Rochdale by 42-0 at the Crown Oil Arena.

Newman scored his hat trick before half time to go with his effort at Batley the previous Sunday. It was also a record breaking day for former Rhino Luke Briscoe who set a new Rovers club record with a second half hat trick, scoring in his 11th successive game to beat Paul Newlove’s previous benchmark. The winger, younger brother of Rhinos star Tom now has 20 tries this season in just ten games.

Newman opened the scoring after just seven minutes to break the deadlock and he was over for a second shortly after. The 18-year-old centre, who is on dual registration with Featherstone, completed his hat trick when he stepped his way around a trio of Hornets on 24 minutes, with Ridyard’s successful conversion making it 22-0.

That is how it stayed until past the hour mark as conditions took a turn for the worse, with torrential rain lashing down.

Briscoe needed just one try to break Paul Newlove’s 1993 Rovers record of scoring tries in 10 consecutive games. But Featherstone’s flying winger wasn’t going to stop at that.

After smashing the record which has lasted close to 25 years, Briscoe went on to complete another impressive hat-trick haul as Featherstone capped off an eight-try demolition of the Hornets.
