49. Wayne Collins scores Leeds’ first ever try on Australian soil

Leeds, along with all the other Super League teams in 1997, entered the ill fated World Club Championship against teams from the Super League competition Down Under. It proved to be a disaster for the teams from the northern hemisphere just one season after the switch to summer rugby and full time training.

However, for the newly named Rhinos they had high hopes against an emerging North Queensland Cowboys team in Townsville and got off to a good start with a try from Wayne Collins.

Wayne, better known as “Snoopy”, joined the Rhinos in December 1996 and although he only played for one season he had a key role in the change of work ethic within the Leeds club under the new administration of Gary Hetherington.

His role at hooker was vital in a season that saw the Rhinos go from third from bottom to runners up in Super League. He made 29 appearances scoring 5 tries.

Wayne joined the Rhinos from South Queensland Crushers having previously played St George in two Grand Finals in 1993 and 1992. He originally started out with Canberra Raiders.

After leaving Leeds he joined Dewsbury Rams, however he was forced to retire with a knee injury after which Wayne took up a role in the community programme at Bradford Bulls before returning home to Australia.
