Milford set for great day out at Headingley Carnegie

This Sunday local amateur side Milford Marlins will attempt to cause one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Challenge Cup when they take on Barrow at Headingley Carnegie, kick off 2pm.

Milford are aiming to become the first amateur side to beat professional opposition since Siddal in 2010 as they get back in to the third round for the first time since 2011.

Leeds Rhinos star Ryan Bailey, himself a former Milford player, says he is looking forward to the game. He commented, "“It will be a great experience for the club and the community and hopefully if they can get a win they can get us in the next round! As a youngster I needed some direction and going to Milford put me in a good position to go on from there, it helped me build my career and I have never looked back since my days at the club.

“I remember training in the mud and the snow and not knowing what I was doing but I made some lifelong friends in those days who I am still really close to. I was fortunate to sign for Leeds with a few of them and we carried on our careers here at the Rhinos.

“My best memory from my time at Milford was when we won the Yorkshire Cup at Post Office Road, Featherstone. That was a special memory from my amateur days. Being alongside my mates and us working together to win the trophy was a great experience and something I still treasure,” added Bailey.

The prop regularly attends Milford games still as they play at the Leeds Rugby Academy at Kirkstall on the state of the art 3G pitch. He added, “I live local to Milford still so I come down and watch their games when I can. I think Rugby League is pretty special in that regard because the players are still very much connected to the amateur game. Danny McGuire and Chris Clarkson were down at East Leeds watching them in the last round of the Cup and I think quite a few of the boys will be coming on Sunday to see the game against Barrow.

“As kids we didn’t have the privilege to use the facilities that the young lads now get to use at Kirkstall. We were training in mud and the wet but the 3G pitch is great for the kids to develop their skills and learn to love the game without getting caked in mud. I went to see the Milford first team last week and there was a great crowd down there to support the team,” added Bailey.

Admission is £7 for adults and £3 for concessions. The match is being run by Milford so the matchday will be different from a usual Rhinos match. Only the Main Stand will be open and you can access the stadium at Gate B on St Michael’s Lane, adjacent to the club shop, and you will pay upon entering the stand.
