Match Report By Phil Daly
The Rhinos Reserve Academy took a massive step to the Play Offs with a 40-28 win over Castleford Tigers at Headingley Carnegie.
The Rhinos appeared to be coasting to victory in the first quarter with three tries inside 12 minutes. The first was scored by Kallum Watkins after he dived on a through kick to score. Simon Brown added the conversion to make it 6-0 after five minutes.
Danny Lawton then doubled the lead after seven minutes and then scored the try of the match after 12 minutes with a long range effort. Brown was off target with both conversion attempts but it was one way traffic for the home side as they led 14-0.
However, credit to Castleford they never let their heads drop and with plenty of time left they knew they could turn the game around. They did just that either side of half time as they raced into a 24-14 lead.
The Rhinos finally found their groove again when Lawton completed his hat trick after 56 minutes by touching down in the corner. The conversion was missed but the Rhinos were within a converted score of levelling the game with a quarter of the game to go.
They duly did equalise on the hour mark with Watkins breaking through on half way before passing to Danny Allan to touch down beside the post to give Brown a straight forward conversion to make it 24-24.
Having got themselves back in the game Rhinos came under intense pressure by allowing the kick off to bounce into touch after each try. However, their defence held firm and they were able to take lead when Matthew Fox crossed in the corner. Brown missed the conversion attempt.
Ben Jones-Bishop scored the next try for the Rhinos with a length of the field effort before Castleford centre Scott Turner completed his hat trick to gain some consolation for the visitors.
It was the Rhinos who had the last word though as Lawton went over for his fourth try of the game. Brown added the conversion to make the final score 40-28 to the Rhinos.
