Leeds Rhinos 30 Hull KR 4

20th January 2017

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos ran in five tries to celebrate Ryan Hall’s testimonial with victory over Hull KR with the man of the hour kicking a touchline conversion to seal the win.

Both coaches named their strongest available sides for this clash and the game was set up nicely as an indicator for both teams for the new season with a fortnight to go until the big kick off.

The Rhinos scored the opening try after just eight minutes when Jamie Jones-Buchanan took Danny McGuire’s pass and powered his way through the gap to score behind the posts. Rob Burrow added the conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead.

Rovers soon hit back though and it was a well crafted score, created by new signing Adam Quinlan with a wide cut out pass, that put winger Ryan Shaw in space and he raced in to score in the corner. The conversion attempt was missed but Hull KR were very much in the game at 6-4.

There was signs from both teams of pre-season rustiness with some ball going down but Leeds defended well when put under pressure and could have gone further in front after a dangerous break by Carl Ablett but the chance went down.

Leeds did increase their advantage just before half time when Joel Moon broke through and then managed to keep his arms free long enough to flick a pass to Rob Burrow to score. He converted his own try to make it 12-4 at half time.

The home side came out fired up at the start of the second half and produced a clinical ten minute spell to pull clear of Hull KR. They scored inside the opening two minutes when McGuire and Burrow rolled back the years, as the latter broke through before finding the former to score. Burrow converted McGuire’s try to increase the lead to 18-4.

It soon became 24-4 when new signing Matt Parcell popped a perfectly weighted pass to Mitch Garbutt as the prop came charging onto the ball to go over at the foot of the posts.

Leeds could have scored again after that when Josh Walters was inches away from scoring after supporting another Moon break but the home side did not have it all their own way. Hull KR looked likely to score on two occasions but for some brilliant defence from full back Ashton Golding, firstly on his own try line and then with a one on one tackle on Quinlan as he broke down the wing.

The Rhinos did cross for a fifth try inside the final ten minutes a cross field kick by Liam Sutcliffe was knocked down by Hall and Jimmy Keinhorst was on hand to pick up the loose ball and force his way over. For good measure, Hall then kicked the conversion from the touchline to make it 30-4 to the home side.
