Doncaster 35 Leeds Rhinos 34

Adrian Morley’s young Rhinos side lost out in dramatic fashion at Doncaster when a late drop goal from Jack Miller sealed victory for the home side 35-34.

The Rhinos had led 30-12 at half time with Jordan Lilley producing an outstanding performance to inspire his team. The Rhinos opened the scoring when Kiedan Hartley intercepted near his line and raced the length of the field to score, converted by Lilley.

The lead was doubled after eight minutes when Jordan Baldwinson proved too powerful to stop near the line with a strong drive. Lilley’s conversion made it 12-0.

Doncaster then hit back when centre Jason Tali spun out of the tackle before stretching out to score.

Midway through the first half, Leeds crossed for a third try when Josh Walters took Cory Aston’s pass, broke the defence and then dived across the line to score.

Spencer Darley was another impressive youngster and he edged the Rhinos further in front with a strong drive for the line. Lilley converted both tries to make it 24-6.

Former Rhino Jamie Thackray got Doncaster back into the game with a second try before Lilley set up Alex Sutcliffe for the young centre to race clear and score from inside his own half. Lilley made it five from five with the boot to make the score at the interval 30-12.

The second half saw an onslaught from Doncaster as they made managed to level the score within 13 minutes. Ryan Wright and Charlie Martin cut the gap before Thackray went over for his second try.  Tom Carr kicked all five conversions to level the score.

Undeterred the Rhinos fought back again and went back in front when Josh Walters set up Hartley to score a spectacular long range effort. Lilley missed his first kick of the game but his side now led 34-30.

There was still time for one last twist as Doncaster hit back through Richie Barnett with ten minutes to go. The conversion was missed to set up a tense finale.

Both teams had chances to get the winning before the last gasp drop goal gapped an exciting pre-season friendly.
