Wigan Warriors 26 Leeds Rhinos 32

20th September 2002

By Leeds Rhinos

Wigan and Leeds refused to let the Super League pace drop as they rounded off the regular season with an 11-try thriller at the JJB Stadium.

Danny McGuire settled the game three minutes from time when he capped a brilliant Leeds fight back with his second try of the night from a magical Barrie McDermott flick.

Leeds had trailed 16-0 early on, but after Keith Senior also scored two tries during their second half resurgence, they go into the play-offs in good heart.

The under-strength Warriors, already assured a third place in the table, looked to have the game under control with five tries from as many players and three goals from Danny Tickle, but after a slow start the Rhinos roared into life.

Wigan initially went for power, dropped Harvey Howard and Craig Smith, getting plenty of opportunity to run at their opposite numbers.

The tactic paid immediate dividends as the home side raced ahead with three tries during an opening 20-minute spell that Leeds spent mostly backpedalling.

The first try came with just two minutes on the clock, albeit from a mis-kick by Terry Newton.  Rhinos centre Senior looked to have the situation under control but was caught out as Gary Connolly nipped in to score.

Smith was rewarded for his early rampages with his side's second try eight minutes later, although his touchdown had as much to do with Adrian Lam's quick footedness as his own brute strength.

Lam created the opening with a sharp dummy and spin on the halfway line and, after a quick sprint downfield, he was happy to let Smith do the rest.  Leeds simply could not stem the tide and they were breached for a third time as Shaun Briscoe finished off a flowing move in the corner.

Leeds finally began to wake up as they mounted their first serious attack in the 24th minute.  They were instantly rewarded with a try as Wayne McDonald got over by the posts and after the recalled Ben Walker converted, a second followed through Andy Hay after a scintillating break by Mark Calderwood.

It promised to set up a tight second half but Wigan seemed to kill off any hopes of a Rhinos' comeback as they touched down twice within four minutes of the restart.

The first came almost immediately after the kick-off as Wigan powered forward and Sean O'Loughlin went over.  Martin Aspinwall followed suit within moments as Senior failed to deal with his second crossfield kick of the night, this time from Lam, to present the substitute with an easy score.

Leeds were not done and set up a grandstand finish with tries from Senior and McGuire within a minute of each other midway through the second half.  McGuire's effort was particularly special created by a quick break from Rob Burrow and a clear run under the posts form halfway.

Senior was not to be outdone and powered over for his second 10 minutes from time and Ben Walker's brilliant touchline conversion levelled the scores.

There always looked like being a winner and, with all the momentum behind them, the Rhinos were the ones who left their final mark on the game.
