Wigan Warriors 20 Leeds Rhinos 6

11th February 2012

By Leeds Rhinos

Wigan Warriors defeated Leeds Rhinos 20-6 at the DW Stadium thanks to a hat trick from winger Josh Charnley.

Leeds Rhinos had Carl Ablett in the centres in place of Kallum Watkins who was ruled out with a wrist injury. Weller Hauraki came into the starting line up at loose forward whilst Chris Clarkson was drafted onto the bench. Wigan were without George Carmont, through injury, and Liam Farrell, through suspension. The game was played in cold but dry conditions as both teams looked to grab the early initiative. It was an even affair early on with Leeds and Wigan tested out their opponents respective defences but not risking too much on attack.

Wigan had the best chance early on when winger Josh Charnley had a try disallowed by video referee Richard Silverwood following an obstruction in the build up.

Jamie Jones-Buchanan worked hard throughout for the Rhinos and he produced a barn storming run in midfield that looked like it would open up the home defence only for Brent Webb to be tackled as he took in the forward’s offload.
Wigan opened the scoring after 17 minutes when they fed the ball quickly along the line and Sam Tomkins short pass to Darrell Goulding gave the centre time and space to put Charnley in at the corner. Richards was on target with the conversion to make it 6-0.

It was almost a carbon copy try after 29 minutes that allowed Wigan to double their lead. Carl Ablett was the player who was isolated and when he could not hold Tomkins, the full back set Charnley away for his second score, which Richards converted again.

Leeds’ plans were dealt a blow midway through the first half when Lee Smith was forced from play with a chest injury after taking a heavy blow. That meant that Zak Hardaker switched to the wing from centre and the Rhinos were forced to play with Carl Ablett and Weller Hauraki as their centres for the remainder of the game.

The Rhinos were finding themselves with an uphill battle as they continually found themselves on the wrong side of referee Thierry Alibert’s decisions. The visitors trailed 6-1 on the penalty count at the interval with the one penalty for Leeds coming via the video referee. Leeds were also guilty of too many handling errors as they looked to stretch Wigan.

However, they could count themselves harshly done to just before half time when they were pulled back for a forward pass when replays seemed to suggest the pass from Hall had been fine.

The second half started more brightly for Leeds as they took the game to Wigan. The Rhinos went close but they were left to rue missed chances when Pat Richards edged his side into a three score lead with a penalty ten minutes into the half after Jamie Peacock was penalised for a high challenge.

Leeds never gave in and managed to come up with the next score following a couple of penalties in their favour. Darrell Griffin took a short ball off Rob Burrow and powered his way over from close range to score his first try for the club. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 14-6 with 15 minutes to play.

However, Wigan sealed the win with less than ten minutes to go when Charnley completed his hat trick after a neat offload by Goulding created the space outwide for the winger to score. Richards added the conversion to make it 20-6.

Leeds pressed hard for a consolation try in the closing minutes but Griffin and Hardaker were both held up over the line in the final minutes.
