Widnes Vikings 10 Leeds Rhinos 46

14th March 1999

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhino’s booked their place in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup as they overcame Northern Ford Premier side Widnes in the quarterfinal tie at the Auto Quest Stadium.

The scoreline will suggest a comfortable victory for the Rhino's, winning as they did 46-10, but the home side gave Leeds a tough test, only falling away in the last quarter of the game.

The Rhino's went into the interval just 10-4 up, points coming from a Harris conversion, and tries by Andy Hay and Brad Godden as they profited from some scintillating work by hooker Lee Jackson.

The Vikings showed their mettle though as they began the second half with all guns blazing, in the process levelling the scores.

Damian Munro was the man who touched down for Widnes, going over in the corner to cap a move instigated by Jim Cassidy. And with Mark Hewitt successfully adding to his two first half conversions it was 10-10.

It was looking as though Leeds was going to have to produce a touch of magic to avoid an upset. And divine intervention came, in the form of Kevin Sinfield.

The highly rated youngster replaced Marc Glanville on 52 minutes and soon made his mark as he scored two tries in the space of three minutes. The second was one to behold as Sinfield used his pace to follow up his own kick and touchdown.

Sinfield's double was the spur the Rhino's needed and the last twenty minutes saw Leeds more than double their points tally as Hay completed a hat-trick of tries, while Marvin Golden, Barrie McDermott and Leroy Rivett also went over as the Vikings tired.

In the final analysis Leeds enjoyed an impressive winning margin, comfortably by 36 points, thanks to the injection of youth, provided by Sinfield and Glanville.
