Warrington Wolves 24 Leeds Rhinos 6

30th May 2014

By Leeds Rhinos

The two form teams in Super League went head to head at the Halliwell Jones and it was Warrington who came out on top with a clinical display of finishing against the Rhinos poorest performance of the season.

The opening quarter was a cagey as the pre-match build up had predicted. It took until the 18th minute for the first score and it came when Chris Bridge broke through in midfield before dummying to evade Zak Hardaker and score. He converted his own try to make it 6-0.

Leeds tried hard to create an opening at the other end but it was proving to be one of those days as they harder they tried, the more errors crept into their game. Warrington then struck decisively with two tries in quick succession. The first came from Chris Hill after he supported a break by substitute Richie Myler and then Bridge crossed for his second try after a long spell of pressure on the Leeds line.

It could have been worse for Leeds at the break when Gene Ormsby collected a loose pass behind Joel Moon and raced down field. He was eventually tackled by Hardaker and Briscoe but he managed to get the ball away to Joel Monaghan and the winger looked certain to score in the corner only for Carl Ablett to produce a sensation tackle to not only stop him, but take him into touch as well.

The Rhinos found themselves with a mountain to climb at the start of the second half trailing 18-0 and they needed another piece of miracle defence to keep the margin at three converted tries. Winger Rhys Evans broke clear down the touchline, evading the attempted tackle by Briscoe but just as he seemed certain to score, Hardaker flew across and took him in touch.

Eventually the home side opted to kick a penalty, despite large periods of possession and leading 18-0, to give themselves a four score cushion against Leeds.

Leeds did finally get on the scoresheet when Moon got the ball to Jamie Peacock near the Wolves line and he popped up a pass for Kylie Leuluai to charge onto and he powered his way over for his first try of the season. Sinfield added the conversion to cut the gap to 20-6 with 19 minutes left to play.

Warrington sealed the win with seven minutes to go when they finally managed to break down the Rhinos defence in the second half as Joel Monaghan reached out to score in the corner. Bridge missed the conversion but the Wolves now led 24-6.

Leeds had a late chance to cut the gap further but Briscoe was forced out in the corner by Ryan Atkins and the home side held out to be worthy winners on the night.
