Warrington Wolves 12 Leeds Rhinos 44

15th August 2004

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos made it two from two at Warrington’s new Halliwell Jones Stadium with a clinical display at the expense of the Wolves.

Lee Briers had opened the scoring with a 40-metre penalty, but the Rhinos moved 6-2 up on nine minutes, Matt Diskin collecting his own grubber to dive under the posts, Kevin Sinfield goaling.

Warrington drew level five minutes later, with new signing Henry Fa'afili leaping above Marcus Bai to take Briers' kick and score his first try for the Wolves.

Chev Walker was fastest to react with Paul Wood lost control of the ball inside his own half and he scooped up the loose ball to race in for his 50th try for the club.

Warren Stevens then hit back for the home side but three tries in a devastating five-minute spell either side of half time saw Leeds move clear at 30-12.

Diskin's reverse pass allowed Barrie McDermott to charge over for the first, before Willie Poching put Bai in at the corner.
Danny McGuire then touched down two minutes after the restart, following good work from Bai and Richard Mathers. Sinfield added all three conversions and a penalty to take him past 100 goals in Super League IX.

Leeds were twice left down to 12 men when Matt Adamson and Diskin were sin-binned for interference.

Leeds sealed the game on 64 minutes, with Sinfield's superb flicked pass allowing McGuire to put Mathers in to open up a 38-12 scoreline.

Sinfield then capped a fine game by sneaking in unopposed from the base of a scrum, and continued his 100% record with the boot to reach 20 points for the game.
