Wakefield Wildcats 6 Leeds Rhinos 70

10th June 2005

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos and Ali Lauitiiti re-wrote the record book at Wakefield as they ran in 13 tries in the club’s biggest ever win in 238 encounters between the two sides.

The Rhinos scored the first try of the game when Richard Mathers was on the end of a flowing move from the visitors after five minutes.

Rooney kicked a penalty for Wakefield after 15 minutes before the Rhinos extended their lead on 23 minutes when Ali Lauitiiti set up Sinfield with his first touch after coming off the bench. Sinfield released Bai to score from a metre out as the cover drew close. Sinfield kicked the conversion to make it 12-2.

The home side hit back five minutes later with Jamie Rooney touching down Ben Jeffries grubber kick. The Rhinos scored six minutes later and it was the incisive introduction of Danny McGuire which created the score his kick allowed Senior to pounce.

If that try was created by deft skill the next was down to sheer power as Lauitiiti got the ball 15 metres out with just Jeffries in front of him, he brushed the scrum half aside to touch down, however Sinfield could not convert.

The Rhinos sealed the half with their third try in three sets when Willie Poching scored against his former club, making it 28-6 at half time.

Leeds continued the onslaught at the start of the second half after three minutes. The Rhinos shunted the Wildcats pack at a scrum causing the ball to shoot out of the back row and Burrow was on hand to dive on the ball.

Mathers then added his second try before the game became the Ali Lauitiiti Show as the giant Kiwi scored four tries in ten minutes to become the first ever forward in the history of Super League to score five tries in a game.

Barrie McDermott finally broke Lauitiiti’s monopoly when he juggled a ball before touching down under the posts. Burrow kicked his third conversion of the game after taking over from Sinfield to extend the Rhinos lead to 66-6.

Lauitiiti then turned provider as he put in Gareth Ellis to score against his former club and cap a great night for the Leeds loose forward and bring the 70 mark up for the visitors.
