Wakefield Trinity 26 Leeds Rhinos 58

7th June 2015

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos made the short trip to Wakefield in the latest round of First Utility Super League action looking to reclaim top spot in the table against a Wildcats side that were hoping to be rejuvenated by the arrival of Brian Smith.

Liam Sutcliffe started at full back for the Rhinos in place of the injured Zak Hardaker whilst, with Joel Moon suspended, Jimmy Keinhorst came in at centre. Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow paired up in the half backs with Kevin Sinfield starting the game at loose forward. On the bench, there was a debut for 18 year old Jordan Lilley with Andy Yates and Josh Walters both returning to the side to replace the injured trio of Brett Delaney, Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Mitch Achurch.

Wakefield started the game in good spirits and opened the scoring through winger Tom Johnstone when he out jumped Ryan Hall to take Tim Smith's crossfield kick. Craig Hall added the conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead after as many minutes.

The Rhinos levelled the score when Sutcliffe threw a dummy and walked through a gap to touch down. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 6-6 after ten minutes.

The game was a tight affair after that before Leeds blew the game open with two quick fire tries from McGuire and Burrow. The first was a great solo effort by McGuire as he scored his 250th try for the club before Burrow made the most of a great break by Kallum Watkins to score in the next set. Sinfield converted both tries to give his side an 18-6 lead.

Wakefield hit back following a great break down the win by Johnstone who then set up Pita Godinet to score in the corner. Hall missed the conversion attempt but that was as close as his side would get as Leeds took the game away from them from that point.

Carl Ablett showed great strength to get the ball down after good work by McGuire and Burrow immediately after the Wakefield try and the Rhinos led 24-10 at half time thanks to Sinfield's conversion.

Leeds ran riot at the start of the second half as they scored seven tries in twenty minutes. Ash Handley opened the scoring as he took McGuire's kick to touch down acrobatically. Carl Ablett then created a score for Sutcliffe with an offload to the full back, which Sinfield converted to make it 34-10.

Jimmy Keinhorst was the next name on the try scorers chart when he followed up his own kick to take advantage of a mix up in the Wakefield defence to score.

Handley then scored his second try following a brilliant pass by Sutcliffe, who then completed his hat trick following a sensational by Burrow. The full back converted his own try to make 48-10.

The rout continued when Brad Singleton came off the bench to score two quick fire tries. The first came after Tim Smith had intercepted for Wakefield but then in turn had his offload intercepted straight back for Leeds. Singleton's second was sheer power close to the line. The Rhinos now led 58-10 and were well in command.

Credit must go to Wakefield who rallied late on with tries from Danny Kirmond, Nick Scruton and Johnstone but the Rhinos were good value for their win.
