Wakefield Trinity 16 Leeds Rhinos 18

10th June 2017

By Leeds Rhinos

Two tries from Tom Briscoe and one each for Stevie Ward and Joel Moon helped secure an 18-16 win for the Rhinos at the Beaumont Legal Stadium.

The Rhinos conceded after six minutes at the Beaumont Legal Stadium as Wakefield winger Mason Caton-Brown picked up where he left off the previous week, when he scored a hat trick in the impressive win at Salford.  Leeds looked in a good position after a break by Ashton Golding before Danny McGuire kicked across field into traffic however centre Bill Tupou was the first to the ball and he offloaded to Caton-Brown to go 90 metres to score the opening try.  Liam Finn added the conversion to put his side 6-0 in front.

The home side increased their lead after 13 minutes and once again it came after a chance for Leeds. Matt Parcell and Joel Moon combined in midfield to set Moon away down field. He was taken down and, despite claims for a trip from the visitors, referee Phil Bentham waved play on and Wakefield were soon over. Leeds were drawn into the tackle and a smart offload by Matty Ashurst put Kyle Wood in space and he held off the challenge by Golding to score. Finn missed the conversion attempt.

Moon did create the next chance for Leeds and this time they were able to capitalise on the opportunity. Moon put in a towering kick on the last that moved in the air and resulted in Ben Jones-Bishop knocking on as he chased across to collect the high kick. From the scrum, Keith Galloway juggled a rocketed pass from Parcell before knocking it back to Singleton. He too initially juggled the ball before offloading to Moon, who put Stevie Ward over for the try.  Liam Sutcliffe missed the conversion attempt from wide out.

Leeds then added a second try almost immediately with a well worked score. Golding created the chance as he cut through on halfway. He passed to Watkins, who initially dummied to Tom Briscoe outside him before drawing the tackle and putting the winger in space. The try still needed scoring and Briscoe spun round and reached out to score.  Sutcliffe was narrowly off target from the opposite touchline but the Rhinos were right back in the game at 10-8.

The Rhinos looked like they had gone in front when Mitch Garbutt charged for the line but he was adjuged to have been held up by the referee and in goal judge and it remained 10-8 at half time.

Wakefield should have extended their lead at the start of the second half when they broke clear following an offload to Sam Williams. The Australian made 20 metres before offloading to Scott Grix, the full back had a man outside him but he threw his pass into touch.

The second half was an attrition affair and it took nearly twenty minutes for the first score of the half. It came for Leeds as Briscoe finished off a fine move started by Moon. He ran the ball on the last tackle before offloading to Ferres, he found Watkins who put Briscoe over. Sutcliffe missed the conversion from the touchline but his side led for the first time.

The Rhinos then went two scores in front when Moon was on hand to capitalise from an error by Wakefield. McGuire, who produced an outstanding kicking game, put in a towering bomb that was dropped when Jones-Bishop and Grix ran into each other. Moon raced through to pick up and score. Sutcliffe added the conversion to make it 18-10.

Wakefield set up a tense finish when Jones-Bishop went over in the corner following a long spell of pressure on the Rhinos line, which Finn converted.

However, Leeds defended the final five minutes well however and held on for hard earned win.
