St Helens 19 Leeds Rhinos 25

10th September 2004

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos banished any demons at Knowsley Road after coming from behind to win at the venue where they had already ready lost twice this season.

For the second successive week, the Rhinos were below their best in the first period but produced a strong second half showing to extend their unbeaten run to 12 games.

Matt Diskin's late minute try this time gave Leeds a narrow victory to dent Saints' hopes of a third placed finish.  Leeds made a great start, Chev Walker shrugging off three tackles to force his way in on four minutes for the opening try, Kevin Sinfield goaling.

Saints pulled back four points when Jon Wilkin was on hand to touch down Paul Sculthorpe's kick after Kevin Sinfield and Mark Calderwood's mix-up, and the home side's dominance grew as the half wore on.

Leeds' Danny McGuire and Saints winger Ade Gardner both went close before Sculthorpe levelled matters with a penalty, after Andrew Dunemann was sin-binned for a professional foul on 25 minutes.

Saints added a second try five minutes later, with Gardner's run getting Leeds on the back foot before Mark Edmondson powered through a gap to touch down, Sculthorpe adding the extras.  Wilkin then turned to creator as Saints moved 18-6 up before half time, with Paul Wellens out-jumping Calderwood to take his bomb.

Leeds – who lost McGuire with a leg injury before the break – continued to allow themselves to be put under pressure by their own errors early in the second period, but they bounced back with two quick-fire tries to level matters.

Matt Adamson made the initial break and Mathers was in support to grab his fifth try of the season.  Marcus Bai then sent Keith Senior over, and two Sinfield goals put them back on terms at 18-all.

Sinfield and Sculthorpe then traded drop goals to leave the scores tied going into the final five minutes before the Leeds captain broke through and put Matt Diskin over.  Sinfield added the conversion as the Rhinos avenged their 56-10 defeat at Knowsley Road earlier in Super League IX to assert their dominance.
