St Helens 10 Leeds Rhinos 8

28th September 2007

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos lost 10-8 to St Helens at Knowsley Road despite dominating the second half. The Rhinos were hoping good things did come in threes as they headed to Knowsley Road looking to beat Saints for the third time this season. However, it was the home side who made it third time lucky.

Saints made the brighter start but when Paul Wellens passed to Willie Talau and it seemed as if the giant centre was on his way through, Lee Smith took the ball out of his grasp and raced 90 metres down field to score. Sinfield added a brilliant conversion to make it 6-0.

WP – Home MPU

Sinfield was unlucky not to extend the lead after 11 minutes when his penalty attempt from 26 metres out brushed the outside of the post and went wide.

Five minutes later St Helens got their reply when Leon Pryce stepped back across the sliding Leeds defence to come back inside and score between the posts. Matty Smith added the conversion to level the game.

The home side took the lead for the lead for the first time after 21 minutes when Matty Smith kicked a penalty 8-6.
The remainder of the half was a real arm wrestle as each team battled for control. Leeds had their best spell just before half time as they looked to make the most of Saints errors. They forced a repeat set but we unable to get across the whitewash and went in at half time two points behind.

The second half continued in the same vein with both sides giving their absolute all in aid of the cause. Leeds forced a repeat set after 48 minutes and from the kick out, the home side were penalised for a high shot on Ian Kirke. Sinfield elected to go for goal and levelled the game.

Leeds were then denied a try after 55 minutes by referee Phil Bentham when it initially appeared Jordan Tansey got the ball down after a scramble in the defence, however the replay showed a defender got the first touch and the try was disallowed. From the drop out, Bentham was again called upon to adjudge a knock on by Clinton Toopi before Scott Donald touched down.

It was the Rhinos defence that was creating the chances as they smashed the home side every time to rapturous cries from the Leeds fans massed behind the posts.

Leeds certainly had the upper hand and could have taken the lead when Rob Burrow attempted a drop goal from 20 metres out but it rebounded off the post and back into play and was mopped up by the Saints.

The home side then went down field for their first visit to the Leeds half in ten minutes and retook the lead. Jamie Peacock was penalised for a high tackle on Nick Fozzard and Matty Smith kicked the penalty to make it 10-8 with 17 minutes remaining.

Leeds continued their dominance after that however and were once again unlucky when Brent Webb took a brilliant offload by Danny McGuire. Webb went for line but a brilliant cover tackle by Matt Gidley denied him and saved the game for the home side.
