Salford City Reds 16 Leeds Rhinos 48

5th May 2002

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds responded to their Super League critics with a convincing demolition of Salford at The Willows on Sunday. The Rhinos stung after Monday’s surprise home defeat by Widnes, rang the changes and upped the tempo to overpower the Reds by eight tries to three.

The visitors took a firm grip on the game as they raced into an 18-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes before Mark Calderwood killed off a brief home rally with the first two tries of his hat-trick immediately after the break.

With the memory of that Vikings loss still fresh in their minds, Leeds – showing five changes – began like a team determined to put things right.

Salford initially matched their enthusiasm. But once Ben Walker had knocked over a routine penalty in the sixth minute, the first quarter traffic was all one-way.

The Rhinos opened their try-scoring account three minutes later when a powerful break saw Adrian Vowles and Keith Senior combine to send Jamie Jones-Buchanan over in his first start of the season.

Walker missed his conversion attempt from wide out on the left but he made no mistake with a similar opportunity five minutes later after Marcus St Hilaire had doubled the try count.

Walker put the pressure on the Reds defence as he forced them to concede a drop-out with a well-thought kick, and winger St Hilaire returned the ball in clinical fashion.

The Reds began to exert some pressure as the half drew to a close and twice went close to scoring through Jason Nicol.

But Leeds weathered the storm and soon reasserted their authority with a superb breakaway try from captain Francis Cummins.

Barrie McDermott created the opening with a powerful surge and off-loaded brilliantly for full-back Cummins to race through the posts from the halfway line. Walker was hardly troubled as he added the extras.

The Reds gave themselves some hope for the second half as some late pressure resulted in Darren Treacy forcing his way over before the break – but it proved a mere flash in the pan.

The Rhinos were soon back in control as Calderwood twice punished the home defence early in the second half.

The pacy winger grabbed his first from a Tonie Carroll pass after 44 minutes and then capitalised on a Treacy mistake for a second eight minutes later.

Kevin Sinfield, taking over from the injured Walker, goaled the first as the visitors took a commanding 30-6 lead.

The Reds managed to pull one back midway through the half when substitute forward Neil Baynes forced his way over – and the industrious Bobbie Goulding converted.

It did little to stem the tide as the Rhinos continued to find chinks in the Reds defence to undermine a spirited performance.

Nimble half-back Rob Burrow added another by the posts with a jinking run from half-back, and Sinfield raced away from 30 metres to inflict further damage. The Great Britain international converted both.

Steve Blakeley, side-stepped his way over for a consolation late on. But the game had long since been lost, and Calderwood completed the rout with his third in injury time.
