London Broncos 36 Leeds Rhinos 36

18th July 2004

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos let victory slip away in the capital and only managed to take a point from their trip the Broncos, with on loan Liam Botham kicking the equalising conversion from the touchline.

Botham denied the Rhinos victory with his late intervention. The Broncos started brightly and were rewarded after five minutes when Nigel Roy caught Dennis Moran's cross-field kick to touch down.

However, it then appeared that the Rhinos had woken out of their slumber three minutes later when Rob Burrow kicked through for Danny McGuire to touch down.  Marcus Bai then scored two tries in three minutes, firstly collecting a McGuire flick after 15 minutes. Then McGuire and Richard Mathers combined to send him in again.

The Broncos showed their resolution though and after 28 minutes Moran spun a superb pass to Lee Greenwood who crossed in the corner.  Moran then knocked on the kick-off to allow Ali Lauitiiti to recover the ball and set up a chance for Wayne McDonald to force himself cross the line.

The Broncos scored a third try after 31 minutes when John Kirkpatrick picked off Bai's pass inside to Chris McKenna to race home.  A fourth soon followed from Mark O'Halloran and the Broncos had clawed their way back into the game.
The Rhinos scored two tries in the opening six minutes of the second half to apparently snuff out hopes of an unlikely Broncos comeback.

Kevin Sinfield went in under the posts after 44 minutes before Chris McKenna took McGuire's pass on the bounce for his side's sixth try.  But the Broncos again refused to roll over – and after 61 minutes Moran ducked under an attempted tackle to cross the line again.

Botham brought his side to within six points with a try which he converted himself after 69 minutes.  The Broncos then pulled level five minutes into injury time when Lee Greenwood crossed in the corner and Botham added the goal from the touchline.
