Leeds Rhinos 72 Barrow Raiders 10

14th May 2017

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos booked their place in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup Quarter Final with a comfortable 72-10 win over Championship One side Barrow Raiders at Headingley Carnegie.

The kick off was delayed by ten minutes after Barrow were caught in traffic arriving at the ground but they could no delay the Rhinos from opening the scoring for long. Joel Moon’s towering bomb caused panic in the Raiders ranks and earned his side a repeat set and Moon then finished the set, dummying to throw it wide before darting through to score.  Liam Sutcliffe added the touchline conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead after just three minutes.

The Rhinos then added a further three tries inside the first twenty minutes of the game to take full control. Brett Ferres had a hand in both of the next two tries, firstly his offload released Tom Briscoe, the winger raced down field before passing back inside to Matt Parcell to score.  Then after 13 minutes, Ferres offloaded at the line to gift Handley with a score outwide. Sutcliffe converted the former to give his side a 16-0 lead.

Moon then crossed for his second try of the game when he and Liam Sutcliffe interchanged passes to unlock the Barrow defence and he went through. Sutcliffe adding the conversion.

After that early shock, Barrow then settled into their stride and crossed for a try following their longest spell in possession as winger Luke Cresswell crossed in the corner to a great reception from the large travelling fan base and Rhinos fans alike.

Leeds were reduced to 12 men after the try when Keith Galloway was shown the yellow card for an off the ball challenge in the build up to the try and that allowed Barrow to keep up their momentum. They battled hard for the next ten minutes on the Rhinos line, going close from dummy half only for quick thinking by Ashton Golding to deny them.

However, having gained a scrum inside the Rhinos half from a knock on, they promptly knocked on themselves on the first tackle and Leeds punished the error. Moon proved too strong at the line to stop to complete his hat trick before Ryan Hall collected a grubber kick on his own try line before racing the full length of the field to score. Sutcliffe converted both to make it 32-4 at half time.

The Rhinos maintained their momentum with a try inside six minutes as McGuire ran at the Barrow defence, dummied twice before going through the gap and passing back inside for Handley to score his second try of the game.

Leeds then added another soon after when Adam Cuthbertson and Anthony Mullally both went close. Play was then switched towards the South Stand and Moon popped up a pass to Stevie Ward to go through the gap and score. Sutcliffe converted both tries to make it 44-4 with half an hour to go.

Sutcliffe was next on the scoresheet with a well deserved try as he ran direct at the line and then stretched out to score before converting his own try.

Ferres had a try disallowed before Rob Burrow finished a fine move set up by Golding, who was supported by his team mates before Burrow finished off outwide to bring up the half century.

Barrow got a loud cheer when they crossed for their second try through forward Jarrad Stack but it was a brief rest for the Raiders as Leeds ran riot in the closing stages.

Burrow crossed for his second try after supporting the break by Handley, who also then set up Matt Parcell for his second try. Prop Keith Galloway put his name on the scoresheet with a powerful charge and Sutcliffe converted all three to give his side a 72-10 lead.
