Leeds Rhinos 70 SM PIA 0

6th May 2005

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds coasted to a comfortable victory against French outfit SM Pia at Headingley to reach the Powergen Challenge Cup Quarter Final.

Tony Smith's side outclassed the French visitors with six tries in the first half and another seven after the interval.
The hosts were without winger Marcus Bai due to a family illness and his absence allowed 18-year-old winger Lee Smith to make his first start for the club.

The visitors included former Featherstone scrum-half Maxime Greseque, who recorded 63 points on his own during Pia's earlier victories over London Skolars and Keighley.

But a strong Leeds outfit took just four minutes to break the French resistance when Calderwood collected Dunemann's splendid kick and raced over the line.

Eight minutes later Leeds extended their advantage when Burrow grounded in the right-hand corner for his 16th try of the season.

It took just four minutes for Leeds to again pierce the French rearguard as Ellis collected Dunemann's delightful offload to cross the whitewash from 10 metres for a try which Sinfield managed to convert.

Despite the scoreline, Pia battled gamely as they attempted to compensate for what they lacked in class with sheer hard graft.  However, it was to no avail as another excellent break from Leeds on the half hour culminated in Ali Lauitiiti offloading the ball to Richard Mathers.

The impressive Smith crossed the line shortly before the hooter and determined not to be eclipsed by the feisty teenager, Calderwood produced a sensational try four minutes after the restart.  Collecting the ball on his own 20-metre line, Calderwood showed outstanding strength and speed to outstrip the Pia defence down the right flank before his lung-bursting run ended with him grounding under the posts.

It was Calderwood's 14th try of the season and Scruton was soon on hand to race over from 20 metres.  Calderwood then added another splendid try after again bursting from his own half before Smith added his second in the left-hand corner.

Burrow then finished off a delightfully-engineered move to claim his second try before Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Mathers scored again to seal a comfortable victory.
