Leeds Rhinos 70 Halifax 22

21st May 1999

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos simply blasted the Blue Sox aside at Headingley on Friday night.

Eventually Graham Murray's men grabbed 12 tries with Iestyn kicking all but one conversion .
The rout started on the seven minute mark, Brad Godden fended off a couple of tacklers to force his way over.
After that Andy Hay put in fine work to make a break, he was eventually held up but not before he had offloaded to Terry Newton who had the simple task of dropping over the line.
Gavin Clinch grabbed one back for the visitors after making a darting run from dummy half but that was against the general flow of things.
Leeds were soon back on the scoring trail when Adrian Morley picked up a reverse pass from Hay to take two men and the ball over for a try.
Morley then had a part in the next try handing off the Halifax cover before he flipped the ball out to Daryl Powell who crossed with ease.
Powell was responsible for the next try with a clever chip kick that bounced over Damian Gibson into the grateful arms of Anthony Farrell who dropped onto the ball for another four points.
Before the half was over Brad Godden had made another decisive break and the result was the ball spinning through many hands before Kevin Sinfield put Leroy Rivett in at the corner. HT 36-4

WP – Home MPU

Halifax came back briefly after the break with strong tries from Jamie Bloem and Andy Hodgson but that merely served as the Rhinos second half wake up call.
Man of the Match, Morley made another great break to put Ryan Sheridan in before a great passing move was finished off by sub Paul Sterling. His try was the only one that was not converted by Iestyn Harris. Harris made up for this by forcing over for a try of his own after making the most of a slice of luck.
The rout was not complete though, and the Rhinos kept pressing, and the next score came form Morley whose run at an angle, foxed the Sox defence before he crossed the white wash unopposed. Quick hands meant that Leroy Rivett was able to dive in at the corner for a brace and still the Rhinos weren't satisfied.
Francis Cummins rounded off the Leeds scoring by pinching the ball from a bad pass from the visitors to streak in under the sticks. Last score, and of no consolation came from Loiners old boy Gibson whose efforts were rewarded with a Clinch conversion.
At the end of the game Graham Murray looked a very satisfied man but his opposite number John Pendlebury looked close to tears and emotionally drained, The Blue Sox coach could offer few explanantions about his sides demise. He was the victim of liquid rugby.
