Last season the Giants came close to securing their first ever victory in Super League over the Rhinos at Headingley Carnegie Stadium but a last minute drop goal sealed a remarkable fightback for the Rhinos and denied the Giants. Danny McGuire has helped set up a tense end to the game with a try which Sinfield converted to bring the scores level at 20-20 with three minutes to go. Then after failed drop goal attempts from Sinfield and Smith, the Rhinos captain finally was on target to secure the dramatic win.

This will be the 26th meeting in Super League between the sides and of those games the Rhinos have been the winning team on 23 occasions, with the Giants’ victory at the Galpharm last season only their third win against Leeds in the Super League era.

Leeds Rhinos 6 Huddersfield Giants 38

15th April 2011

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos endured a horror night as they slipped to a 38-6 defeat to Huddersfield Giants at Headingley Carnegie.

The opening exchanges were error strewn from both teams with neither side able to string a period of pressure together. Eventually it was the visitors who settled into their stride first and they scored the opening try through Dale Ferguson after 19 minutes. Luke Robinson and Danny Brough were the architects and the former Wakefield man finished the move off.
The lead was doubled after 24 minutes when Jermaine McGillvray finished off a move created by an offload from Darrell Griffin 15 metres out. Robinson and Brough combined again before Scott Grix gave the final pass to put the winger away in the corner. Brough converted both tries to put his side 12-0 in front.

The Rhinos had a couple of half chances but all too often errors cost them any chance of building pressure on the Giants line. The visitors in contrast took every opportunity and extended their lead through a penalty from Brough.
A disastrous first half for the home side was concluded when Ferguson crossed for his second try. Once again it came from an offload close to the line and Ferguson handed off Brent Webb to score. Brough converted to make it 20-0 at the break.

As expected, the Rhinos came out fired up at the start of the second half but initially they still could not break down the Giants defence. Kylie Leuluai received a warning from referee Ben Thaler for a big hit on Kevin Brown before a mass brawl sparked from the next tackle which resulted in Ryan Bailey and Luke O’Donnell being sent off for their part in the trouble.
Inevitably the tensions were now raised and every tackle represented a potential flashpoint. The Rhinos got a try back when Senior broke down the Main Stand before producing a great offload to put Rob Burrow in for the try. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 6-20.

However, any hopes of a fight back were extinguished on the hour mark when the Giants extended their lead with a try from Shaun Lunt, who had just come on. There was an element of good fortune in the build up as a number of balls bounced the Giants way however they made the most of the opportunity for Lunt to score. Brough converted to make it 26-6 to the visitors.

The Rhinos had further chances as the Giants were reduced to 11 men when Simon Grix was sin binned for deliberately holding down Brent Webb as the full back looked to get a quick play the ball. However, a nightmare evening was complete with two late break away tries from the Giants. The first was finished off by Luke Robinson after Webb had chased back to stop a certain try but was then sent to the bin for holding down. The Giants then capped a memorable night when Lunt scored his second try following an interception. Brough converted both tries to make the final score 38-6 and inflict the Rhinos heaviest home defeat since 42-10 loss to Bradford in 2005.
