Leeds Rhinos 54 Salford City Reds 14

15th July 2005

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos recorded an emphatic 54-14 win over Salford City Reds at Headingley with Mark Calderwood scoring his fourth hat trick of the season.

The Rhinos scored first when Richard Mathers set up McGuire just inside the Salford half, and the stand off raced down field to score. Rob Burrow added the conversion.

The Rhinos doubled their lead six minutes later when Burrow was on hand to scoop up a loose pass after Marcus Bai had broke clear. The scrum half then increased the lead with a difficult conversion.

Chev Walker's well timed pass then released Calderwood, who shrugged off the last defender to score. Burrow kept up his 100% effort with the boot.

Richard Mathers was next to score after good work by Willie Poching and Ali Lauitiiti. Burrow's conversion making it 28-0 after 28 minutes.

Six minutes later the Rhinos were in again as Andrew Dunemann stepped his way through the Salford line. Mathers then went in again after a delightful offload by Lauitiiti as he fell to the ground, released the full back and he bamboozled the last defender to score.

Just before half time, Mark Calderwood went in for his second score on the night, latching onto a reverse pass from Francis Cummins, making his first appearance for 10 months. Burrow's converted to make it 42-0 at half time.

Salford were quickest out of the blocks at the start of the second half scoring three unanswered tries. Stuart Littler scored first before Tim Hartley finished off the try of the game with a flowing length of the field move before Littler crossed for his second try.

That try sparked the Rhinos into life and shortly after turning over possession on the half way the Rhinos moved the ball to the Main Stand side and Mark Calderwood sprinted in at the corner to complete his hat trick, the second of his career against Salford.

Almost straight from the re-start the Rhinos were in again, Marcus Bai broke down the wing before finding Poching who shrugged of the challenge of three would be tacklers to score.  Burrow wrapped up the scoring with a splendid solo try from 30 metres out.
