Leeds Rhinos 52 Catalans Dragons 6

20th August 2010

By Leeds Rhinos

Hat tricks from Danny McGuire and Ryan Hall set the Rhinos on their way as they put the Dragons to the sword at Headingley Carnegie.

The games was played in slippery conditions after a torrential downpour an hour before kick off. Those conditions looked like they would cost the Rhinos in the opening minutes as Catalans kicked to the corner but as Steven Bell slid to collect the ball it just escaped him before he could ground the ball.

The Rhinos immediately turned defence into attack and crossed for the first try after three minutes. Lee Smith created the chance as he broke down the South Stand side and passed back inside for Danny McGuire to score. Sinfield added the touchline conversion to make it 6-0.

Leeds were in determined mood and they doubled their lead after 12 minutes. It could have come sooner, with Smith dominant down his wing however the second try came down the opposite side with Ryan Hall being gifted a try by Keith Senior. Sinfield made it 12-0.

Rob Burrow crossed for the Rhinos third try three minutes later as he supported the break of Senior well and, despite juggling the pass, crossed for the score. Sinfield hit the post with his conversion but it rebounded inside the post to make it 18-0.

It got even better for the Rhinos as the first quarter of the game drew to a close as Hall crossed for his second, which was almost a carbon copy of his first effort. Sinfield was on target and the Champions led 24-0.

Catalans finally found their feet after that and enjoyed their first real spell of possession. They were denied with their first attack at the Leeds line but having gained a repeat set after James Child noticed the slightest of knock ons by a Rhinos defender, eventually the Dragons got over. Casey McGuire forced his way over from close range and with Thomas Bosc adding the conversion the score was now 24-6.

Leeds responded well to that score and added two more tries before half time. The first was a sensational effort by Danny McGuire. Catalans lost possession 20 metres from the Leeds line and the Rhinos reacted quickest. Eastwood picked up the ball and fed McGuire who raced 80 metres to score but was chased all the way by Bell. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 30-6.

Then with a minute to go Lee Smith scored his side's sixth try after taking a pass from Delaney 15 metres out which he finished off well. Sinfield missed his first kick of the night but the Rhinso led 34-6 at the break.

It did not take long for the Rhinos to increase the lead. Just eight minutes into the second half, Ryan Hall completed his hat trick to bring him to 23 tries for the season, just two behind the leading try scorer, Wigan's Pat Richard. Sinfield was back on target to make it 40-6.

Leeds continued to pour on the pressure and Brett Delaney was the next try scorer when he crossed after 58 minutes as he slid through on the wet surface to score.

The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for McGuire though as he completed his hat trick in spectacular style. Once again it was a long range effort as he covered 65 metres to score between the posts. Sinfield converted both tries to make it 52-6 and send the Rhinos on their way to their second biggest win of the season.
