Leeds Rhinos 46 Wakefield Wildcats 4

14th September 2007

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos ran out comfortable winners at Headingley Carnegie with a 46-4 win over Wakefield in the final game of the regular season.

Leeds hit the ground running and after several waves of pressure Brent Webb delivered the knock out punch. There seemed to be nothing on when Wakefield kicked to the corner on the last tackle but Webb danced through the onrushing defence before passing to Danny McGuire who burst through to score. Kevin Sinfield converted, to make it 6-0 after five minutes.

The Rhinos continued to dominate the game with Webb and McGuire at the heart of some breathtaking attacking rugby at times. Eventually McGuire released Sinfield close in and he stepped around the defence and scored between the posts to give himself an easy conversion to make it 12-0 after 24 minutes.

Seven minutes later the Rhinos extended their lead even further with a piece of individual brilliance by McGuire. Twenty metres out he chipped over the defence before collecting his own kick and then taking two would be defenders over the line with him. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 18-0 to the home side at half time.
The Rhinos continued their dominance after the break and took just four minutes to extend their lead when Rob Burrow latched onto a loose ball after a high kick to the corner was spilled by Paul White. Burrow raced down the touchline and dived in at the corner.

Clinton Toopi was then on hand four minutes later to latch on to a great through kick by Sinfield. The Leeds skipper converted to make it 28-0.

Leeds were in free flow now and they increased their lead further after 53 minutes. McGuire made the initial break before passing to Donald. The Australian set off down the wing but then unselfishly and brilliantly flung a pass back inside over three men to find the supporting run of Burrow, who scored his second try under the posts. Sinfield converted to make it 34-0.

The Rhinos kicking game was in top form and it was not long before the lead was extended further. This time it was Brent Webb who was the recipient as he latched onto a bouncing ball in the in goal to score. Sinfield added the conversion to bring up the 40 point mark.

Wakefield finally got on the scoreboard two minutes later when Ben Jeffries forced his way over in the corner. Rooney could not convert so it remained 40-4.

After Wakefield had had a man sin binned, the Rhinos took a tap and eventually Lee Smith cut through the line to score next to the upright. Sinfield converted to make the final score 46-4.
