Leeds Rhinos 46 Wakefield Wildcats 28

1st August 2004

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos maintained their four point lead at the top of Tetley’s Super League with victory over Wakefield, as Danny McGuire set a new try-scoring record in a Super League season.

The brilliant stand-off took his season's tally to 29 to overhaul Paul Newlove's 1996 record.  The Rhinos had to wait until the 14th minute to break the deadlock when prop Danny Ward barged his way over from 10 yards out for his first try of the season.

But Wakefield hit back within two minutes through Rooney. Rooney then turned provider on 27 minutes, setting up Wainwright to touch down and make it 10-6.  But Leeds hit back within a minute through Poching and on 32 minutes slick handling from Marcus Bai and Keith Senior created an opening for Richard Mathers.

The young full back could have scored the try himself but selflessly turned the ball back inside for his mate McGuire to score his record-breaking try.  The Rhinos killed off the game as a contest with two quick-fire tries after the break. Matt Diskin's grubber kick caught the Wildcats defence napping and Poching reacted quickest to score his second try of the afternoon.

Rob Burrow went over under the sticks after another slick handling move, before tries by Wakefield's David Solomona and Jason Demetriou cut the deficit to 10 points.  Inevitably, Leeds hit back on 57 minutes when McGuire sent Keith Senior over and Chris McKenna added the Rhinos' seventh try on the hour, before Burrow notched his second.
Wakefield did manage late scores from Jeffries and Jason Demetriou, although they were little more than consolations.
