Leeds Rhinos 46 Catalans Dragons 10

10th March 2017

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos produced a performance built on guts and determination to see off a very talented Catalans Dragons side at Headingley Carnegie.

Having been embarrassed at table toppers Castleford eight days earlier, Leeds were never going to lack motivation for this clash but they came out in belligerent fashion.

The Rhinos had a try ruled out for a forward pass when Sutcliffe appeared to be over for the opening try however the score did eventually come when Cuthbertson took the offload from Parcell to score. Sutcliffe converted from in front and knocked over a penalty to make it 8-0.

The hosts survived a scare when full-back Ashton Golding pulled off a try-saving tackle on Justin Horo after Luke Walsh's spiralling kick had bounced back off the upright.

More defending was to come after Cuthbertson's sin-binning for delaying a 20-metre tap sparked a series of penalties, which resulted in a team warning.

Referee James Child followed through on his threat to send another player to the sin bin, Keinhorst the player to see yellow.

That left Leeds down to 11 men and the Dragons' pressure finally told as centre Brayden Williame went over out wide and Walsh was unable to add the conversion.

Cuthbertson returned to the field for the restart and soon returned the compliment to Parcell as he offloaded to the hooker, who showed great strength to hold off the defenders and touch down for his first Rhinos try.

Sutcliffe made it three from three from the boot to give Leeds a 10-point cushion at the interval.

Keinhorst dummied his way over from acting-half with a great piece of individual skill at the start of the second half and Sutcliffe converted to make it 20-4 but Catalans were back in it when Bousquet touched down next to the posts despite loud calls for a forward pass.

Leeds had to defend their line stoutly after that but then Cuthbertson crossed for an important try before Rob Burrow and Danny McGuire took their side out of sight with two long range tries, McGuire’s from a great break by Keinhorst.

Sutcliffe then got a well deserved try as he chased through to touch down Burrow’s kick. He converted the try and added a late penalty to complete the well earned victory.
