Leeds Rhinos 44 Hull KR 14

12th June 2011

By Leeds Rhinos

Ryan Hall scored a hat trick in the 44-14 win over Hull KR at Headingley Carnegie.

The Rhinos returned to Headingley Carnegie for a rare Sunday evening clash with a resurgent Hull KR side. Leeds included all six players who were involved in the England v Exiles game 48 hours earlier with Danny Buderus and Kylie Leuluai starting on the bench.

The weather was the major influence on the game early on rather than the team selection as four hours of heavy rain before kick off left the pitch sodden. Territory was going to be key and the Rhinos managed to dominate the possession in the opening quarter. They were able to put pressure on the visitors on defence which brought handling errors near the Hull KR line. Eventually the pressure would bring the opening score and when Scott Murrell slipped in the defensive line it created a gap for Lee Smith, who slid across the turf to score. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 6-0 after six minutes.

The game was becoming a lottery because of the conditions and both sets of players had to make sure that they stayed well in from touch as it was an easy task to drag ball carriers into touch. It was one such error that led to Hull KR's first try. Having turned over possession 15 metres from their own line, Hull KR fed the ball to the short side from the scrum and Ben Cockayne scored in the corner. Dobson was unable to add the conversion so the Rhinos maintained their narrow advantage after 16 minutes.

After those early errors, the game settled into a more recognisable shape after those two tries and once again it was the Rhinos who dominated possession. They eventually got over for their second try when Brent Webb threw a high looping pass to Ryan Hall, who finished smartly in the corner. Sinfield was off target with the conversion attempt so the Rhinos led 10-4.

The Rhinos had a great chance soon after when Rob Burrow broke through but he was unable to get the ball to Lee Smith for a certain try. However, Leeds soon had the ball back when Hall dragged Liam Colbon into touch. And their was no mistake this time as Weller Hauraki ran straight through the Hull KR line to score his team's third try of the game. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 16-4 after 34 minutes.

Hull KR finished the half strongly helped a string of penalties against the home side on their own line. Leeds defended well and held Clint Newton up over the line however with the final play of the Kris Welham was the fortunate player to have the ball richochet straight into his path to score from a grubber kick by Dobson. Dobson slipped over as he attempted to kick the conversion but he still got it over to make the half time score 16-10.

The second half had barely got underway and the Rhinos were able to cancel out that late score. Cockayne spilled the ball as he tried to come away from his own line and McGuire was on hand to scoop up the ball and go over. Sinfield added the conversion.

Five minutes later, Hull KR hit back when Newton produced a great offload to put Craig Hall away in the corner. Dobson missed the conversion however it was one way traffic after that.

The Rhinos scored four unanswered tries to seal the win with Ryan Hall the star of the show as he completed his hat trick. The first came from some good hands from Brent Webb and Lee Smith however his third was a real collectors item. He created the chance himself as he raced down the wing but was tackled short of the line. The ball was moved in field on the last tackle and Hauraki offloaded to keep the chance alive. Once again Webb and Smith were involved and Hall dived in at the corner.

In between those two scores, Zak Hardaker had scored down the opposite wing after being set up by Delaney and the youngster returned the compliment after 74 minutes when he put Delaney through 40 metres out for the centre to score. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 44-14.
