Leeds Rhinos 38 Wakefield Trinity 14

17th March 2017

By Leeds Rhinos

Two tries from Kallum Watkins and one each for Anthony Mullally, Ryan Hall, Adam Cuthbertson and Matt Parcell plus a faultless night with the boot from Ashton Golding gave the Rhinos victory over Wakefield.

The Rhinos welcomed back Brett Ferres and Mitch Garbutt for this clash with Wakefield. The return of the pair of forwards negated some of the loss of Brad Singleton to suspension and Liam Sutcliffe, who failed to recover in time from a quad strain.

The game was played in drizzling rain and a swirling wind and it had an impact from the off as Ashton Golding’s kick off sailed out of play as it was caught by the breeze at his back in the first half.

Leeds had the better of the territory and possession in the first half with Adam Cuthbertson carrying on where he left off seven days earlier with some powerful runs and clever offloads to get his side going forward. However, the Rhinos efforts were matched by some resolute defence from the visitors.

The Rhinos finally broke the deadlock after 18 minutes. The chance came after some great work by Cuthbertson, Parcell and Brett Delaney before Ferres was held up over the line. Leeds kept the pressure up and a smart cross field kick by Joel Moon was plucked out of the air by Kallum Watkins, who timed his run and jump to perfection, to catch and go over and score between the posts. Ashton Golding added the conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead.

Wakefield hit back soon after with a piece of well executed opportunistic play. After Leeds knocked down a pass, they used the free play to try something and the cross field kick was fielded by Tom Johnstone after a bounce before the winger cut back inside to win the race to the line. Sam Williams missed the conversion from the touchline.

Leeds stretched their lead after 29 minutes when Anthony Mullally showed great strength to get over the line and then stretch out an arm to score. Golding was again on target and then added a penalty to give his side a ten point lead heading towards half time.

The Rhinos then capped a fine first half with a second try on the hooter by Watkins following a superb pass by Parcell near the line. Golding kicked the conversion to put the Rhinos in control at 20-4 at the interval.

The home side increased their advantage at the start of the second half. The chance came following a barnstorming run by Delaney to get Leeds in position and then quick hands put Ryan Hall in space to go over in the corner. Golding added the touchline conversion, kicking into the wind, to make it 26-4.

Wakefield did manage to cut the deficit when David Fifita crashed over from short range, Williams adding the conversion, but it was Leeds who were on the front foot.

Cuthbertson then crossed for his fourth try of the season as Burrow bewitched the defence with his dummy before putting the prop over.  Golding added the conversion.

Burrow was then the victim of a swinging arm by Danny Kirmond that earned the Wakefield skipper a ten minute spell in the sin bin and whilst he was off Parcell scored his second try in as many weeks to increase the lead. Golding made it seven goals from seven attempts.

Wakefield were twice denied in the corner, firstly for a forward pass and then Jones-Bishop was taken into touch in the corner. Trinity did finally get a try with the last play of the game as Johnstone scored his second try as he caught a cross field kick after the hooter from a penalty to score. The conversion was missed by Williams.
