Leeds Rhinos 38 Huddersfield Giants 6

16th April 2004

By Leeds Rhinos

Tony Smith enjoyed a welcome return in his first game against his former club with his new team winning 38-6 at Headingley.

The Rhinos opened the scoring after just six minutes, Andrew Dunemann making a half break and feeding Mathers, who dived in from close range.

Kevin Sinfield converted, and the Rhinos created a 10-0 cushion with a thrilling length-of-the-field try seven minutes later.

Marcus Bai collected Brandon Costin's kick on his own line and beat two men before racing to half way, linking with Danny McGuire and then Mathers before Chev Walker finished at the corner.

Huddersfield pulled back two points through a Costin penalty, and the Giants added a try of their own on 24 minutes St Hilaire scoring against his old club.

Leeds added a third try before the break, with Mathers and Chris McKenna putting Walker in on the right for his second.
Walker completed his hat-trick on 59 minutes, touching down after Cummins had hacked Willie Poching's kick through inside.

Cummins again proved the architect for Leeds ten minutes later, just managing to grubber back infield as he headed towards the touchline to allow Dave Furner to dive in.

And the Rhinos sealed the win with two late tries when Danny McGuire supported Keith Senior's break to touch down for the seventh successive game and Furner dived over for his second score.
