Leeds Rhinos 32 St Helens 12

26th April 2014

By Leeds Rhinos

Two tries from Zak Hardaker and one each from Danny McGuire, Joel Moon and Jamie Peacock booked the Rhinos place in the Tetley’s Challenge Cup Quarter Final.

Leeds and St Helens have met in some classic Cup encounters in recent years and this match up was set to equal those previous encounters given both team’s form at the start of the season.

WP – Home MPU

Saints had lost top spot to Leeds six days earlier on Easter Monday but they had beaten the Rhinos at Langtree Park earlier in the season so were not lacking in confidence.

Leeds had the early initiative when Saints knocked on at the kick off and three minutes later the Rhinos opened the scoring when Zak Hardaker showed great strength to hold the ball up one handed before driving it down to the turf as he crossed the try line. Sinfield added the conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead.

St Helens hit back ten minutes later. Having withstood an attack from Leeds, the visitors went down the other end of the field to score. Mark Percival made a great break on half way and put Adam Swift in to score. Luke Walsh added the conversion to level the scores.

The remainder of the half was as tight as expected however the game turned with three minutes to go. Referee Silverwood awarded Leeds a scrum although replays suggested the ball had not gone out of play. Leeds did not wait for a second invitation and worked a move from the scrum. Hall, as he did all game, was a menace to the Saints defence and his offload to Hardaker opened up the chance for the full back to score his second try. Sinfield added the conversion to give his side a 12-6 lead at the break.

The game was very much still in the balance but Leeds struck decisively in the opening ten minutes of the half. Sinfield extended the lead with a penalty before Joel Moon proved too strong for the Saints defence as he dummied before cutting back inside to score. Sinfield’s conversion gave his side a 20-6 lead.

Saints were never going to throw in the towel and they came straight back with a try from Josh Jones, converted by Walsh. After that they threw everything at Leeds to try and set up a grandstand finish however the Rhinos defence stood firm.

The Rhinos then sealed their place in the Quarter Final with a great break by Kallum Watkins setting Danny McGuire up for a try five minutes from time. The tie was settled in the final two minutes when Jamie Peacock powered his way over from close range. Sinfield converted both tries to make the final score 32-12.
