Leeds Rhinos 30 St Helens 18

18th February 2005

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos began their home campaign in front of a capacity 21,225. The Rhinos took the lead inside five minutes when Mark Calderwood produced a textbook dummy to ghost past Darren Albert. Sinfield added the conversion to extend the Rhinos lead.

That was quickly doubled when Leeds produced a flowing move after ten minutes. McGuire took possession twenty metres out and floated a pass over the top to Sinfield, the Leeds captained dummied to Keith Senior and could possibly scored himself but passed to Walker to race in, Sinfield contenting himself with the conversion to make it 12-0.

However, Saints, who had been delayed by traffic on the way to the ground, eventually found their feet and hit back in fine style. Firstly, Darren Albert made the most of a break by Paul Sculthorpe and James Graham to score in the corner.

Leeds should have taken the try as a warning but straight from the kick off Saints drew level as Graham once again crashed through lacklustre defending and raced clear. Sculthorpe was tackled short but Keiron Cunningham was on hand to drive over from dummy half. Sculthorpe’s conversion levelling the game at 12-12.

The Rhinos then took the lead again when Richard Mathers produced a sublime catch and turn to out sprint the Saints defence after McGuire had put him through the gap. Sinfield converting.  However, the try scorer misjudged a kick by Jon Wilkin and Willie Talau touched down to level the scores at 18-18 at half time.

The Rhinos struck first at the start of the second half as Willie Poching scored his second try of the season when he was fastest to react to a perfect grubber by McGuire, Sinfield’s conversion making it 24-18.

The Rhinos took a commanding lead on the 68th minute when a towering bomb by Sinfield was allowed to bounce by Ade Gardner and Mark Calderwood was onto the half chance like a flash. He dribbled round the hapless winger and touched down in the corner. Sinfield added the extras with the aid of a post and the Rhinos secured a 30-18 victory.
