Leeds Rhinos 28 Huddersfield Giants 24

26th February 2015

By Leeds Rhinos

A late Paul Aiton try sealed victory for the Rhinos as they snatched the win four minutes from time as the hooker claimed his first try for the club.

Both teams had a fortnight to prepare for this game but it was the Rhinos who came out fastest from the blocks, putting the visitors under pressure from the start as the Giants tried to come away from their own line into a driving sleet storm that began just before kick off.

After a couple of half chances the Rhinos finally crossed for the opening try. The move was started by Tom Briscoe who was alert to a loose ball from a Huddersfield kick. He first to get to the ball and made 30 metres up field before earning his side a penalty. The Rhinos made the most of their possession near the Giants line as Paul Aiton went for a short side option and found Danny McGuire, he tipped the ball on to Carl Ablett, who stepped back across the defence to dive over after eight minutes.

The Rhinos nearly doubled their lead soon after when Briscoe spectacularly jumped to knock a bouncing ball back between two Huddersfield defenders but it dropped just behind the on rushing Kallum Watkins.

It was not long before the Rhinos did increase their advantage. On the back of another penalty, Adam Cuthbertson took a pass from Kevin Sinfield and powered his way over from close range. Sinfield converted both tries to put his side into a 12-0 lead after 23 minutes.

Three minutes later the Rhinos were in again. A smart break involving McGuire and Moon put Ryan Hall in space and he powered passed two would be tacklers to score. Sinfield added the touchline conversion to give his side a commanding 18-0 lead.

However, Huddersfield struck back in the final ten minutes of the half with two tries of their own. This time is was the Giants who made the most of their penalties. Jamie Ellis, who had seen most of the ball in the Giants half back pairing, spotted a gap and stepped back inside to avoid the first tackle before stretching out to score.

They cut the gap even further when Joe Wardle forced his way over from close range. Brough added the conversion and then the visitors thought they have levelled on the stroke of half time but Wardle lost the ball as he tried to stretch out.

Leeds appeared to put any nerves behind them at the start of the second half as they extended their lead once again. The score was created by a fine offload by Mitch Achurch to Stevie Ward. The latter galloped up field before producing a brilliant pass to put Tom Briscoe in space to score his fourth try of the season. Sinfield pulled his conversion attempt wide but his side had a ten point lead after 43 minutes.

However, penalties began to bite the Rhinos badly and allowed the Giants easy metres. Huddersfield got a try back when Kyle Wood took Leroy Cudjoe's kick to score. The try came after both teams had gone close but it set up the fight back by Huddersfield. They hit the front for the first time with ten minutes to go when Brett Ferres went through a gap to level the score. Brough added the conversion to put his side in front.

Leeds had to dig deep and eventually came up with the winning score. Having been awarded a scrum 10 metres from the Giants line, they kept the ball alive and Paul Aiton stretched out to score his first try for the club. Kevin Sinfield added the conversion to put his side 28-24 in front.

The Rhinos then had to withstand four minutes of pressure to hold on for their first win over the Giants at Headingley Carnegie since 2011 and made it three wins from three.
