Leeds Rhinos 24 St Helens 16

27th February 1999

By Leeds Rhinos

Indiscipline was the deciding factor in this game that saw both sides grab two tries each.

In a frenetic opening the Rhinos were the chief culprits, adjudged to have lingered too long in the tackle on three separate occasions by referee Stuart Cummings.

Sean Long kicked all three penalties.

However, Saints were far from blameless in the first quarter and they were penalised for all manners of reasons, including obstruction and pinching the ball in the tackle.

Iestyn Harris managed to kick the Rhinos back to parity.

With five minutes of a bruising first half left, the Rhinos made a breakthrough.

Ryan Sheridan, who again turned in a Man of the Match performance, backed his forwards up, eventually saw a gap and then stepped and dummied over the line for his second try in two games

Return to matches
Iestyn converted the try and bagged another penalty after the break when he was the victim of a late challenge from Sony Nickle, who was left flat-footed after a clever chip and chase.

However the Saints stormed back into the match after Kevin Iro and Vila Matautia combined to put an overlapping Paul Newlove into the corner for a try.

At 14-10 at this stage, the match could have gone either way, but Saints coach Ellery Hanley was left furious with the manner that his men eventually lost the game.

Apollo Perelini, with a facial on Richie Blackmore and then a flop on Terry Newton and Nickle for a over vigorous attempt to tackle Anthony Farrell, were both penalised and two conversions from Harris put the visitors nine points away from a now unlikely victory.

The Rhinos triumph was eventually sealed with their second try of the match, Anthony Farrell offloaded while being tackled to Terry Newton who raced over the line to make the game safe.

With seconds left on the clock Paul Atcheson grabbed a try back, but the game was over by then.
