Leeds Rhinos 22 Warrington Wolves 23

4th July 2002

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos’ disappointing run continued with a 23-22 defeat at home to Warrington; where Lee Briers’ last minute drop goal gave the Wolves a shock win. After defeats to St Helens and Widnes and a last-ditch win at Wakefield, the Rhinos needed two more points to maintain their challenge, but threw away two healthy leads in front of their home fans.

Mark Calderwood and Karl Pratt helped them into an early 10-0 lead before Ben Westwood replied for the Wolves.

Andy Hay and Chev Walker added further scores before the Wolves centre grabbed a second try to keep the Wolves in touch at 22-12 going into the break.

The second half remained scoreless until Danny Halliwell's try cut the gap to six points going into the final ten minutes, and then Sid Domic's score, converted by Lee Briers, levelled the match.

The Welsh international then added a 35-yard drop goal in the final minute to snatch a dramatic point for the relegation threatened Wolves.

The Wolves had seen themselves drop to 11th place in the table with a defeat at home to Wigan last week, but were level on six points with both bottom club Salford and Wakefield, who were the better off on point’s difference.  But they gave their survival hopes a big boost by mounting a stirring late comeback to snatch two crucial points.

However, they seemed an unlikely prospect when Leeds raced into a 10-0 lead inside 11 minutes.  Mark Calderwood grabbed the first try after Briers was unable to collect Adrian Vowles' bomb, with Kevin Sinfield converting.

Karl Pratt then touched down in the other corner when he out-jumped David Alstead to a Ryan Sheridan bomb.  Pre-match rain had made the surface greasy, and the Wolves hit back when, after the ball had come loose, Briers sent Ben Westwood in for their opening try, the stand off converting.

Andy Hay has had a barren try scoring spell of late, but he powered his way over on 20 minutes to restore Leeds' lead, Sinfield again adding the extras.  Daryl Powell again shuffled his team selection, and Tonie Carroll, this week playing in the second row, burst through the Wolves' defence before Sheridan supported to send centre Chev Walker in for his third try in two matches.

At 22-6, the Leeds of May – when they won all five games against the likes of Bradford, Wigan and Hull – would have romped away with this game.  But they allowed Warrington a glimmer of hope on 34 minutes with Briers' grubber enabled Westwood to grab his second try of the match, Briers converting for a 22-12 half time deficit.

Leeds were disappointing after the break, and the Wolves cut the gap further to only six points on 68 minutes to set up an exciting last 10 minutes when Briers' inventive kick allowed Danny Halliwell to touch down.

Three minutes later, hard working loose forward Sid Domic defied the attentions of three Leeds tacklers to get him over the line, Briers' goal levelling matters before the stand off took matters into his own hands to grab the win with a drop goal.
