Leeds Rhinos 21 Huddersfield Giants 20.

16th July 2010

By Leeds Rhinos

A last second drop goal from Kevin Sinfield sealed a remarkable fightback from the Champions at Headingley Carnegie.

Leeds Rhinos welcomed back Danny Buderus, Kylie Leuluai and Ali Lauitiiti to the side for the visit of Huddersfield Giants. For Lauitiiti it marked his first appearance in Super League since mid-April whilst Buderus and Leuluai returned after shorter lay offs.

Huddersfield were without their talismanic full back Brett Hodgson but were buoyed by the news earlier in the week that Head Coach Nathan Brown would remain at the Galpharm Stadium for 2011.

It did not take long before Leuluai announced his return with a bone crunching tackle straight from the kick off. That set the tone for the opening ten minutes as both teams produced some solid defence meaning that attacking opportunities were few and far between.

However, the game seemed to take a crucial turn after 12 minutes when Giants prop Darrell Griffin was sin binned for a needless late challenge on Danny McGuire, after he had kicked down field. The Rhinos could not take immediate advantage though as Danny Buderus knocked on after brilliantly taking an offload from Carl Ablett near the line only to lose possession under pressure as he went for the line. The home side did not lose their composure and came back down field to earn a repeat set.

They got their reward in the very next set. Danny McGuire and Kevin Sinfield combined in midfield to catch the Giants out and a clever pass from the latter released Chris Clarkson, who produced a sublime step to cut back inside and race 20 metres to score between the posts. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 6-0.

Both teams had chances after that to add to the scoreline. Hall could not take in Sinfield short high kick to the corner before Gilmour knocked on just short of the line for the visitors.

However, the visitors did make their next chance count when Robinson flicked a pass off his hip to Shaun Lunt, who glided through on a great line passed the despairing dive of Keith Senior. Lee Smith gave chase but could not prevent Lunt from scoring. Brough was off target with the conversion attempt leaving the score 6-4 after 29 minutes.

Neither coach will have been happy with some of handling in the remainder of the first half with a lot of spilled ball. However, there was a frantic end to the half when Huddersfield knocked as the hooter sounded and it looked like the Rhinos might get one last chance to extend their lead but Sinfield's kick was caught by David Hodgson and the score remained 6-4 at the break.

The game was turned on its head in the first ten minutes of the half with two tries from David Hodgson. The first was a controversial one. Lee Smith allowed a grubber kick to run towards the touchline in goal, Hodgson chased up but appeared to get his hand on the ball after it had crossed the line. Initially it was signalled for a 20 metre re-start but then, just as the Rhinos were about to take the tap, the entire stadium, including the Giants players, were shocked to see referee Ben Thaler award the try. Had the game been on Sky, there is some doubt if the try would have been given as replays at the ground showed Hodgson touch down out of play.

Two minutes later, Hodgson extended his side's lead even further. The crowd appealed for a knock on after Graeme Horne had failed to take a pass in midfield but replays suggested it was the correct decision to play on as the ball appeared to go backwards. The Giants did not hang around to argue the point and moved the ball quickly along the line to allow Hodgson to go around the outside of Donald to score in the corner. Brough got his first conversion of the night to make it 14-6.

Leeds needed a response and they came up with it after 52 minutes. Jones-Buchanan and Senior combined well before the latter offloaded to Ryan Hall near the line, and the winger showed great strength to get passed three wouldbe tacklers to score. Sinfield converted to make it 14-12.

Sinfield managed to level the score with just over ten minutes remaining when Huddersfield were penalised 20 metres from their line.

However, having got back on level terms, the Rhinos were their own worst enemy as Buderus and Clarkson dropped off a tackle on Larne Patrick and the Giants replacement then beat Delaney and Smith to score. Leroy Cudjoe had taken over the kicking duties and gave his side a crucial six point lead with time running out.

The Rhinos though are never beaten and came roaring back. Ryan Hall was released down the wing and showed all his Test level experience to kick back in field for McGuire to collect and score. Sinfield levelled once again with three minutes to go at 20-20.

That set up an incredible last stand off between the two sides. Sinfield pushed a drop goal attempt wide but Leeds got possession back when the Giants knocked on. Next it was Smith who missed with a kick from further out. Once again the Giants could not kill off the game and gave the Champions one last chance. This time Sinfield was on target to seal an incredible fight back and a 21-20 victory.
