Leeds Rhinos 16 Wakefield Wildcats 23

20th July 2007

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos slipped to a last gasp 23-16 defeat to Wakefield at Headingley Carnegie with the Wildcats snatching the points with a last minute try from Luke George.

The Rhinos forced three goal line drop outs in the first quarter and eventually the pressure told when Danny McGuire produced a high, hanging kick into midfield and Ryan Bailey out jumped the defence before spinning and going over untouched to score. Kevin Sinfield added the conversion to make it 6-0 after 15 minutes.

Wakefield hit back with two penalties from Jamie Rooney but despite pressure from the home side they were unable to increase their lead before the break.

However, at the start of the second half an arcing run by McGuire set up Clinton Toopi. The Kiwi international powered his way up field before offloading back inside to the supporting McGuire, he drew the last man to send Rob Burrow over for his 12th try of the season. Sinfield converted to make it 12-4 after 48 minutes.

Leeds had chances to extend their lead but were left to rue those errors after 58 minutes when Olivier Elima powered his way over from short range on the Main Stand side. Rooney added the conversion to cut the Rhinos lead back to just two points.

The Rhinos needed a lift and they got it when an attempted pass from Sinfield to Jones-Buchanan cannoned off the second rowers legs before he picked up the rebound. He raced down field, then passed to Ryan Hall and three tackles later, Webb kicked into the corner for Donald to chase and he touched down for the 100th try of his career. Sinfield's conversion hit the post and bounced away to leave the Rhinos six points in front.

Then with nine minutes remaining Wakefield broke quickly upfield and Ryan Atkins bounced his way over the line under pressure from two would be tacklers. Rooney's conversion levelled the game to set up a tense finale.

Rooney took the lead for the visitors with a coolly taken drop goal before the final act of this tight game came in the closing minutes when Luke George dived on a Ben Jeffreys kick through to score. Rooney converted to make the final score 23-16 to the visitors.
