Leeds Rhinos 16 Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 22

26th December 2008

By Leeds Rhinos

A young Rhinos side outscored Wakefield four tries to three at Headingley Carnegie but lost out 22-16 to the more experienced Wakefield outfit. A young Rhinos side took the field at Headingley Carnegie for the Cravendale Festive Challenge with four trialists from the French domestic competition looking to impress and earn a contract with the Champions.

Leeds started well after Wakefield allowed the kick off to bounce out of play behind the dead ball line. After a good spell of pressure Paul McShane was unlucky not to get over from close range. However, the more experienced Wakefield side grew in ascendency as the game wore on and the Rhinos had to produce seom solid defence conceding three goal line drop outs in a row at one point. However, the Rhinos came up with some fantastic defence to keep the Wildcats at bay with trialist Amar Sabri particularly impressive. Eventually, the pressure told though when quick hands saw the ball passed along the line and Liam Walmsley just got between Jodie Broughton and the corner flag to score. Tony Martin was off target with the conversion attempt to leave the score 4-0 after 16 minutes. After that blow, the young Rhinos came back fighting with new signing Luke Ambler leading the charge. The youngsters showed great skill and flare with a great offload game that asked questions of the Wildcats in almost every tackle. Eventually that created space for Jodie Broughton to score in the corner after 24 minutes from a pass by Kallum Watkins. McShane missed the conversion but the scores were now level. The Rhinos had a chance to take the lead six minutes before half time when McShane weighted a grubber kick perfectly to the in goal but Watkins could not regather the bouncing ball to score the try. Leeds were made to pay for that error on the stroke of half time when Sam Obst sneaked over from dummy half. Tony Martin added the conversion to make the half time score 10-4.

Once again the young Rhinos came back though and scored ten minutes into the second half. Luke Burgess and Unaloto Lamelangi had produced some impressive big hits already but then Kallum Watkins smashed Chris Annakin to top the lot 20 metres from the Rhinos line. Danny Allan picked up the loose ball and fed Watkins. He in turn released Broughton who went 60 metres to score. McShane's attempted conversion went side but the Wakefield lead was now cut to just two points. However two quick fire tries took the result beyond doubt for Wakefield as first Matt Blaymire cut a good angle of run to glide through the defence then Jamie Rooney showed good strength to force his way over. Crucially, Rooney converted both to make it 22-8. There was still fight left in the Rhinos though as they came straight back. Jodie Broughton completed his hat trick on 74 minutes, finishing off well in the corner before Michael Ratu finished off a great flowing move to score down the South Stand side. The young Rhinos had outscored the visitors four tries to three but were left empty handed but they could be proud of a great team effort.
