Leeds Rhinos 10 Bradford Bulls 42

19th August 2005

By Leeds Rhinos

There was bitter disappointment for the Rhinos at Headingley as they slumped a 42-10 defeat to arch rivals Bradford Bulls.

The Rhinos drew first blood when teenager Lee Smith crossed after he created the try with his hard work. He chased a Sinfield kick to pen Vainikolo in his own in goal then he earned a penalty with a quick run from dummy half. From the resultant set of six, a floated kick out wide was collected by Smith to score.

Smith was peppered by high kicks but he dealt with everything thrown at him in the first quarter.  The Bulls though did hit back through Shontayne Hape after 28 minutes. Kevin Sinfield stopped a certain try from Vainikolo but Hape had the presence of mind to go from dummy half and score.

The Rhinos were then dealt a devastating blow when Keith Senior suffered a serious ankle injury with Danny McGuire already off the pitch with a shoulder injury picked up in the build up to the Bulls try.  Andy Lynch then extended the Bulls lead with seven minutes remaining in the half, Deacon’s formality conversion making it 12-4.

With the loss of Senior and McGuire, the Rhinos seemed subdued however when Lynch lost control of the ball under pressure from Ward, Lauitiiti fed Sinfield who stepped through the Bulls cover to race 50 metres to score under the posts, with his conversion bringing the Rhinos back to within two points at half time.

Six minutes into the second half Bradford though re-established their lead through substitute Jamie Langley.
Leeds were failing to control the ball and with so much possession Bradford were likely to got another opportunity when Paul Deacon ducked under a would be tackler and dived for the tryline.

Hape then scored his second try after quick thinking by Vainikolo. Robbie Paul compounded the misery in the next set as he took the pass off Pryce to race clear. Deacon was on target this time making it 32-10.  The next try ricocheted off two Leeds defenders before Iestyn Harris picked up the ball and touched down next to the posts.  Hape then completed his hat trick with six minutes remaining in the game touching down in the corner leaving the score at 42-10.
