Hull KR 10 Leeds Rhinos 18

27th May 2007

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds had to battle the elements as well as a dogged Hull KR side to win 18-10 at Craven Park.

Tries from Clinton Toopi, Jordan Tansey and Danny McGuire sealed the win in driving wind and rain as Leeds maintained their place at the top of engage Super League.

However it was the home side who got the first points of the game after they had forced Leeds to drop out four times from behind their own posts. Paul Cooke kicked a penalty from ten metres out after he had been blocked by Danny McGuire when he tried to chase his own kick. His penalty making it 2-0 after 13 minutes.

Leeds had their best spell of pressure at the start of the second quarter of the game with Jamie Peacock and Jamie Thackray leading from the front. The Rhinos were awarded two penalties less than ten metres from the Rovers line but elected to tap on each occasion. Eventually the pressure told but there was an element of good fortune in the score. Rob Burrow's grubber kick bounced off the foot of Paul Cooke and Danny McGuire raced through to touch the ball down. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 6-2 after 25 minutes.

Four minutes later Cooke halved the Rhinos lead with his second penalty after Jamie Jones-Buchanan was penalised for a high tackle 16 metres out.

Leeds had to produce some great last ditch defending to keep the home side out with five minutes remaining in the half. Firstly, Brent Webb and Jones-Buchanan held up Cooke next to the posts and then Scott Donald bundled Luke Dyer into touch at the corner flag to maintain their lead at half time.

The Leeds fans did not have to wait long to see their side score again. A great 40:20 kick by Jordan Tansey gave Leeds the field position and then from the scrum, Clinton Toopi beat the first man and powered his way over from short range. Sinfield converted to make it 12-4 to Leeds after 46 minutes.

Leeds scored their third try when Brent Webb came into the line, stepped his way through before bursting upfield. He drew the last man and passed back inside to Jordan Tansey to score between the posts. Sinfield's conversion made it 18-4 after 66 minutes.

However, Rovers were given a lifeline with ten minutes remaining with their first try of the game. Stanley Gene looked like he had got over but was just stopped short. However, the ball was moved quickly wide and former Leeds player Jason Netherton crashed over. Cooke added the conversion to make it 18-10.

The Rhinos had a chance through Scott Donald to get their fourth try at the death but he was held up and Leeds hung on for 18-10 win.
